Liverpool Opinion: Two strikers the Reds should consider this summer?

Liverpool are gunning for the coveted Premier League title this season and currently top the charts. Having reached the Champions League final last season, they have really laid down a marker as one of Europe’s most exciting sides.

The Reds have an array of quality players but they are mainly known for the attacking trio that consists of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. Mane has been a cornerstone for Liverpool’s march towards the title this season and while Salah’s form has faded of late, the Egyptian still is one of Jurgen Klopp’s crucial members.

Roberto Firmino is indispensable for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, being the most used player at the club last season. His link-up play is excellent, with Klopp utilizing the Brazilian to deadly effect in a false 9 role. But when the 27-year-old fails to work his magic, the Reds boss has very limited options to call from the bench to change the course of the game.

Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi have been used sporadically this season as Klopp has shifted Salah in the centre-forward role at times. Hence, it’s vital for the Reds to sign a striker as a back-up to Firmino. That being said, here are two strikers Liverpool should consider signing.

1. Timo Werner (RB Leipzig)

Liverpool have been strongly linked with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner ahead of a potential summer swoop.

The Germany international, 23, has established himself as one of the lethal strikers in Europe. He has scored 12 goals and supplied two assists in 23 Bundesliga games this season.

Quick, pace and agile, Werner is an extremely composed finisher in front of goal. He is a predator in the box and terrorizes defences with his movement and link-up play.

The German is one of the hottest young strikers in Europe for a reason and if Liverpool manages to land him this summer, it should be Klopp’s one of the best signings at Anfield.

2. Maxi Gomez (Celta Vigo)

As per the Sun, the Reds are already weighing up a £35million summer move for Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, who has scored nine goals and assisted five times in 25 league appearances.

The Uruguayan, 22, has done well in the La Liga since joining from Defensor Sporting in 2017, netting 26 goals in 63 appearances for Celta.

It’s clear Klopp needs another striker in his ranks despite having a fearsome front three. And signing Gomez would give Liverpool a different boost from the bench, whilst challenging Firmino for a place in the starting XI.

But as the 22-year-old has a contract at Celta until the summer of 2022, the Merseysiders will have to break their bank in order to acquire his services.
