Liverpool might have concluded the 2018/19 campaign on a high note by winning the Champions League as well as finishing second in Premier league table.
But, were they complete in all the aspects on the field? The answer would be a ‘no’ as their midfielders were insipid throughout the season. However, the strength possessed by the attack and defence was overwhelming for Jurgen Klopp to seal the deal.
The midfield line-up which includes the likes of Naby Keita, Geroginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and Jordan Henderson, completely lacked inspiration and creativity.
The bitter truth is that Liverpool would have easily ended their Premier League trophy drought last season if not for the lack of their midfield quality.
Going forward, Klopp has to improve the quality of his midfield as he can’t always wager on the other areas on the field.
That being said, they should resume their interest in RB Leipzig midfielder Emil Forsberg, who was on their transfer radar last summer. (h/t The Sun)
His age, 27, may look quirky but he is a safe bet for Klopp. Besides his stint with Leipzig over three seasons, Forsberg is an eminent figure with Sweden’s national team as he bagged the Swedish Midfielder of the Year award twice.
The Former Malmo man opted for a move to Bundesliga in January 2015 and since then, he has become an integral part of the side.
However, Forsberg’s best season turned out to be the 2017/18 campaign, where he topped the assists charts in Bundesliga with a mind-boggling number of 22.
On the downside, the Swedish ace fell as a prey to the recurring injury woes in the past two seasons, but his contributions remained valuable.
Notwithstanding his injury concerns, Forsberg managed to rack up 7 goals and 9 assists last season with a pass success of 81% and an average of 2 key passes per game.
An out-and-out playmaker is what the Reds need in the upcoming season and they can acquire the services of Forsberg, an underrated gem.
Another interesting by-product that comes with the Leipzig midfielder is his versatility to play in several positions, though his preferred position is No.10.
He can play as a winger, as a wide midfielder and even as a second-striker, which is clear from his average of 1.5 attempted shots per game. Klopp can certainly make the most of the aforementioned qualities to ease the pressure of the Reds’ attacking unit.
To restore their glory days in the Premier League, the Reds should try and lure Forsberg away from Bundesliga ahead of the new season.
