After yet another frustrating draw in the domestic league, against arch-rivals Manchester United, Liverpool are back in action this week in a group stage encounter in the UCL against Slovenian side Maribor on Tuesday. The Reds have picked up just two draws in their first two group games in the competition and will go all out for a victory in this game.
Klopp’s side have been inconsistent but facing the bottom dwellers in the group means that they have a great chance of registering their first European victory of the season. Klopp has little options for his first team and is expected to go with a similar line-up like at the weekend.
The Reds are still without the services of Nathaniel Clyne and Adam Lallana, who are on their road back to fitness. Star winger Sadio Mane will miss the next month with a hamstring injury and will not make this trip. Joe Gomez is back from suspension but might not start this game for the Reds.
Formation: 4-3-3
Manager: Jurgen Klopp
GK – Loris Karius
Mignolet has been faultless this season and Karius the opposite. But it is hard to see Klopp ignore Karius for the UCL games. He should start in goal against Maribor.
RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold
The youngster was not on the team sheet at the weekend but is expected to be back in action on Tuesday against Maribor at right-back.
CB – Joel Matip
After a solid performance against Manchester United, Matip will hope to continue his form away from home in Slovenia.
CB – Dejan Lovren
Probably had his best game of the season against Lukaku and co and Klopp will hope that the performance can get him to new heights.
LB – Alberto Moreno
The Spaniard has been tremendous since the start of the season and is expected to keep his place at left-back.
CDM – Jordan Henderson
The skipper was also at his best at the weekend and if he can put in a similar performance, Liverpool are sure to come away with all three points.
CM – Emre Can
The German was struggling to impose himself on the game at the weekend but should keep his place in the midfield, and has a chance to make a mark on this game.
CM – Georginio Wijnaldum
The Dutch international was a treat to watch in the middle of the park at Anfield on Saturday but has not been effective away from home since moving to Liverpool. He will hope to change it against Maribor.
RW – Mohamed Salah
The Egyptian winger had a couple of half chances which he should have buried and will hope that he can take his chances if they come his way in this game.
LW – Philippe Coutinho
The Brazilian playmaker was reduced to mediocrity by Mourinho’s men but he will be a danger man to Maribor and their backline.
ST – Roberto Firmino
Though not in great form, Firmino is a key figure in the squad at Anfield and Klopp should start him for this UCL group stage fixture.
