Liverpool Latest Including Jose Callejon And Jonjo Shelvey

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has already enriched his side with two Spanish players this season after he bought Iago Aspas from Celta Vigo and Luis Alberto from Sevilla. Now he is targeting a third Spanish player with Real Madrid man Jose Callejon, who has had a tough time with Real Madrid this season.

If Luis Suarez leaves in the summer, Rodgers would need to strengthen his strike force and include in the team some players of high quality to replace the multidimensional Uruguayan. Even if Suarez stays, the manager wants to build a squad with a proper bench strength which can manage the wear and tear of the long and gruelling season. This justifies his acquisition of Aspas, Alberto and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, in spite of having the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Phillipe Coutinho and Fabio Borini in the side.

The latest player to grab the attention is Madrid’s 26-year old Callejon and now Rodgers wants to get this highly talented midfielder in the summer transfer window. It is highly likely that Callejon would be part of a deal that sees Luis Suarez move in the opposite direction, but even without that deal Rodgers wants him to make a move to the Merseyside club.

The 26-year old started his career as a Real Madrid graduate before moving to Espanyol in 2008. But in 2011 Real Madrid again wanted to get hold of their former player and thus transferred him back to the club. His second innings with the club has not been too smooth with him being demoted to the benches more often than not. In 76 appearances for the club he has scored 20 goals and has displayed his talent over the globe. This has prompted Rodgers to make a move for him and deploy him in the attack of the club.

But Liverpool are not the only club though who have made enquires for the player with Napoli and Fiorentina not very far behind. The transfer season is set to formally get away from July and it looks like the fight for Callejon is sure to get intense.

Playing as a second fiddle at 26, Callejon might never get a chance to enter the Spanish national setup and as a result, his agent Manuel Garcia Quilon has started to look for alternative clubs, with Liverpool among the front-runners, according to the Daily Star.

In other news, West Ham are preparing for a battle against Swansea and Norwich for Liverpool’s 21-year old midfielder Jonjo Shelvey. According to the Mail on Sunday says Liverpool will let England Under-21 midfielder Shelvey leave this summer with his boyhood heroes West Ham, Swansea City and Norwich City are all interested.

Shelvey had some poor games last season but had some good games as well. The one very alarming problem with the midfielder is his decision making which is a common problem with most of the young English players. Shelvey like many young Liverpool players were handed first team opportunities as the Reds were short of players. He was trying too hard to impress and mainly to score goals which ultimately led him to making mistakes.

This could end up being another Tom Ince situation for the Merseyside. He can be sent on loan, to gain some game time and experience, instead Liverpool could sell him cheap and then end up realising it was a mistake.
