Chris Wood was brilliant for Leeds until last season
Despite the topsy-turvy nature of Leeds United’s league form over the last couple of years, the club has made some pretty decent signings to be fair and for very little money at that.
The likes of Kemar Roofe and Samu Saiz might be making this list in time, given their low fees and decent form but for now, a few others have perhaps made more of an impact over a longer period of time.
Three of them are listed below and are a key reason why Leeds have even been able to challenge for playoff positions. Two of them are still at the club and are absolutely vital to Thomas Christiansen’s chances of living up to the comments he made upon taking over at the club – that Leeds’ aim this term was nothing other than to get promotion back to the Premier League.
Having initially joined on loan from the Italian club, Jansson proved himself one of the best defenders in the Championship last season and has not disappointed this time around either.
This sort of fee is not insignificant in Championship football, however, in comparison with the amount of money received for the likes of Wood and the money shelled out by the likes of Boro and Wolves, this is nothing. Jansson, undoubtedly, has international quality and is still getting better, meaning Leeds will need to get promotion quickly or else risk losing the big Swede to a big league club.
Leeds United tied full-back Ayling to the club by agreeing on a new four-year deal with the former Yeovil and Bristol City man recently and that is a great business.
The 26-year-old joined the Yorkshire side from City last August and has made well over 50 appearances for the club across all competitions. The Premier League would seem to beckon for Ayling and so paying less than a million for him looks great about now.
The darling of the Leeds crowd last season in the Championship, scoring 27 goals in 44 league games before leaving for Burnley in a deal worth £15m.
Wood is not looking out of place in the Premier League and so the £3.24m fee Leeds paid for him has been shown to be a pittance, though he is a big miss up front.
