Jurgen Klopp must be wise enough and sign this £7m Chelsea brick wall for Liverpool

Why Liverpool must make a shrewd move to sign Chelsea veteran Gary Cahill

Liverpool have enjoyed an eventful summer so far, with manager Jurgen Klopp signing the likes of Monaco midfielder Fabinho, RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri. Latest reports suggest that the Reds have agreed on a world-record fee for Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who is set to join the club this week.

Jurgen Klopp is also on the hunt for a new centre-back this summer, after the club failed to provide sufficient cover for Dejan Lovren last time out. The former Borussia Dortmund manager is going to have to act fast, given that defence is the only area that needs additions and backup.

Chelsea could be facing a number of exits this season, with Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois and Gary Cahill all linked with moves away from the club.

Klopp could use this opportunity to lure Cahill to the Merseyside. Chelsea have sufficient cover in defence after the emergence of Andreas Christensen and the signing of Antonio Rudiger last season.

The Blues have also been linked with a move for Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani. The Italian’s arrival would see captain Cahill fall further down the pecking order. Hence, Klopp could convince the English defender to make the move.

The 32-year-old joined the Blues from Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2012 for a reported fee of around £7million. He has since gone on to make a total of 189 Premier League appearances for the club, becoming a force to reckon with.

The Englishman has been one of their most consistent performers over the last few years. Playing for Chelsea, Cahill made a name for himself as one of the fiercest defenders in the Premier League. But last season saw him fall down the pecking order with Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger preferred over him.

He made a total of just 24 starts in the Premier League last season. Cahill was also a part of the England national team that finished 4th at the World Cup in Russia. Cahill is admirably fit and certainly capable of playing for a few more years.

His vast experience in the Premier League makes him an enticing option to have in any squad. The defender is also calm and composed on the ball. He averaged a pass success rate of 89% in the Premier League last season, displaying his passing ability on the ball.

Klopp cannot afford another slip-up due to sloppy defensive mistakes and should certainly make the move for the player. Cahill will considerably strengthen the Liverpool backline with his authoritative presence and leader-like voice in the dressing room. He would be a massive signing for the Reds and would immediately solve their defensive woes.
