Why Andrew Robertson Would Solve An Age Old Problem Prevailing At Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool only managed a draw in their second pre-season game this summer as they failed to score more than a goal against a well-drilled Wigan Athletic side at the DW Stadium on Friday. However, the fans were treated to great news after the game, which got everyone excited.

According to a number of trusted news outfits in England (Guardian), Liverpool have all but completed the signing of Hull City left-back Andy Robertson this summer. The Daily Mail claims that Liverpool have agreed on a deal with the player and the club, for a £8m move before the start of the next season and this will solve one of the biggest problems in the squad at the moment, at least temporarily.

The Reds have failed to find a genuine left-back for over half a decade now as the likes of Jose Enrique, Glenn Johnson, Jon Flannagan and Alberto Moreno have all failed to show enough promise in that position. Jurgen Klopp could not find the right man last summer and decided to use versatile English midfielder James Milner in that position, which worked to good effect.

However, at 31, he is no longer an option in the first team on the flank and it is desperate times for the Reds to find a genuine left-back to solve the impending problem in the squad.

Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, the 23-year old Hull City star is the first choice left-back for Hull and he was one of few people who could keep their head high after a relegation threatened season at the KCOM.

The Tigers fell to the Championship, having failed to win enough points last season but Robertson did no harm to his reputation, putting in some strong performances, against the best wingers in the league.

Though not a top class creative full-back, Robertson is a disciplined defender who knows his duties at the back. He is quick with his passing and never takes unnecessary risks while his dribbling abilities are also effective at both ends of the field. He is strong and can hold on to the ball but needs to work on his aerial prowess, if he wants to be a hit in the Premier League again.

He is still 23, and will learn at Anfield but more importantly, he is a left footed left-back, who will defend his heart out. Though he may not be a long term option, that he is a player who can solve a few problems at the club in the upcoming campaign. And may be, acting as an understudy to Milner in the domestic games will make him a better player than what he already is.

Robertson, the man to solve Liverpool’s problems at the back? There is a possibility.
