Liverpool returned to winning ways after edging past Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 away at the Amex Stadium to restore a seven-point lead at the top of the table. Defending champions Manchester City could reduce the gap to four if they beat Wolves on Monday, but the Reds have created the pressure on them to produce.
Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the game to seal the three points for Jurgen Klopp’s men, who had to dig deep for that result. In a frustrating first half for the away side, partly because of the solid defensive organisation of the home team, chances came at a premium.
Roberto Firmino could have done better with a chance early on from an Andy Robertson cross, but the ball skipped away from the Brazilian before he applied a boot.
The best chance of the half fell to Xherdan Shaqiri, whose header was inches wide after some good work and cross from Trent-Alexander Arnold.
Liverpool came out with more purpose and intent in the second half and opened the scoring five minutes in. Salah twisted and turned Pascal Gross in the box before the latter lost patience and brought the former down. It was a simple decision for the referee to give the penalty and the Egyptian was spot on with it.
Brighton had one or two glimpses late on but it was comfortable for Liverpool, largely down to another commanding performance from Virgil van Dijk, well supported by the other defenders, especially Fabinho.
