Is It Time Liverpool Finally Sign This 16-Million Rated Midfielder?

Liverpool have made quite a progress this season and the next season would really test Brendan Rodgers’ ability as a manager. The board and the fans would all be wanting for a top four finish next season and Rodgers must convert the early promise into something long lasting. Consistency on the pitch must be improved and there should be a certain amount of constant pressure on the opposition in the field. Although Liverpool have a sound attacking force consisting of Suarez, who now looks to be staying in the Merseyside, ever consistent Gerrard, Sturridge, who has impressed after his transfer in from Chelsea during the January transfer window, a resurgent Downing and the talented Coutinho, they still need some flair in the midfield to capitalise on this already present impressive squad. Rodgers has initially identified some targets and Ajax’s Christian Eriksen tops his list. Some of the reasons why Liverpool should go for him are as discussed below.

Raw talent– The 21 year old attacking midfielder has emerged as one of the most talented prospects in recent times and his performance for Ajax has attracted attention from top clubs across the globe. He should thus perfectly fit into Liverpool who are trying to build a squad around dynamic young players and instil a certain method of play. We have already seen Coutinho’s effects on the side and his partnerships with Suarez and Sturridge and the acquisition of Eriksen would only make the side stronger.

Cheap option– Eriksen’s contract with Ajax expires in 2014 and he has already expressed his desire to play in the Premier League. Under these circumstances it is presumable that Ajax would let go of their gifted midfielder for a nominal price which would benefit cash starved Liverpool. Liverpool are not in a position to attract the biggest of names from Europe and Eriksen is exactly the kind of player who could benefit the club and also be available at a very low price.

Champions League experience– It is rather a pitiable fact that Liverpool last played in the Champions League in 2009 and they would want that to change that very soon. Thus Eriksen who has Champions League experience behind him would fit the bill perfectly and Rodgers would like him to lead the proceedings in Europe.
