How Does Pep Guardiola’s Man City Compare With Arsene Wenger’s Legendary Invincibles?

Manchester City have made a remarkable start to the new Premier League season and have managed to maintain that scintillating form so far. They are unbeaten this season, and it is certainly drawing up some comparisons between them and Arsene Wenger’s legendary ‘invincibles’ of 2003-04. As City switch from defence to attack in the blink of eye, Pep Guardiola’s men deliver do show flashes of their ability to go down in history as one of the most legendary teams ever. But, can they truly emulate Wenger’s invincibles?

Watching Guardiola’s team this season is strikingly similar to Arsenal of 2003-04. Wenger’s team used to slice opponents up with the likes of Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires and Freddie Ljungberg – often referred to as their fantastic four. One might argue that City boast of stronger offensive might and midfield wizardry with Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Kevin de Bruyne, David Silva, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva all fighting for starting places.

With that being said, the only area which could cost them the Premier League title and the possibility of being the new age invincibles is their defence. However, if City do it, their achievement would most definitely top Wenger’s famous side which won the Premier League title with 26 wins, 12 draws and 0 losses back in 2004. Looking at this team right now, City’s players at the back could either make or break their season as they are close to being perfect when going for the attack.

Mere aggression in terms of the attack will not be enough as defensive solidity has to be key as well. Guardiola’s men are flying this season but they have been conceding quite an amount of goals. As of now, it seems impossible to beat them because of the way their attackers can just score at any given time. But what will happen if they had to contend with injuries or fitness issues picked up by their main stars up front?

As of now, even if a side gets ahead with a higher goal margin, City can either push for a tie or amp up the pressure to score goals but what if they did not have that luxury?

It may be too soon to comment on whether City can match that achievement. In the world of football, things can go awry in no time. Take a look at Europe’s reigning champions Real Madrid, for example. They are struggling to live up to the expectations in the La Liga while also suffering in the Champions League.

City have earned plenty of praise for their swashbuckling style, but they have a long way to go in terms of their defence. While it does seem tough, it is not impossible. If any team can get close to, or even top Wenger’s legendary side, it is probably this Manchester City team.
