Why Derby County should sign Mason Mount from Chelsea
Derby County are one of the many clubs understood to be keen on taking Chelsea starlet Mason Mount on loan for the upcoming season. The 19-year-old enjoyed a successful spell last term with Dutch side Vitesse, making 38 appearances in which he scored 14 goals and provided 10 assists.
Ultimately, he was chosen as Vitesse’s Player of the Year. However, he faces serious competition for a spot in the Blues’ first-team and Chelsea believe another loan would provide some useful experience to the youngster.
With Frank Lampard at the helm, the Rams are one of the favourites to land the attacking midfielder. Mount joined Chelsea when he was six but is yet to play a senior game for the Stamford Bridge outfit.
He has represented England at all youth levels and was invited to train with England’s senior squad ahead of the World Cup in Russia. The Daily Mail even suggested Gareth Southgate is looking to bolster his squad with fresh blood for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers and that Mount is one of the players on his radar.
Having said that, it’s clear the 19-year-old has a lot of potential and is set for a bright future. Derby County, who are yet to make a signing during this transfer window, would be very wise to add him to their team. The fans also seem to think this way – a poll on DerbyshireLive showed 97% of voters would like to see the midfielder at Pride Park next campaign.
Of course, we’re yet to see what kind of formation Lampard’s going to use and how Mount would be able to fit in. But he’s versatile as he can play behind the striker and also on either flank. If he’s to be used as a classic No.10, he’ll have to compete with Tom Lawrence for a starting XI spot.
It doesn’t seem like an easy task, given the Welshman’s strong performance last season but with a long and demanding campaign ahead, Mount would surely get his chance.
Let’s not forget Mount was Jody Morris’ captain when Chelsea won the FA Youth Cup in 2017. He had also helped the Blues lift the Youth Cup the previous season.
Is it hard to give a definite answer to the question ‘would Mount be a success at Derby?’
He’s still way too young and doesn’t boast of a lot of experience. He’s talented and ambitious though and those are the first ingredients required for success.
