Go for it Jose – Manchester United should sign £72m Real Madrid star to solve Paul Pogba conundrum

Why Manchester United must go all out to sign Toni Kroos from Real Madrid in the summer

Manchester United were linked with a move for Real Madrid’s midfield maestro Toni Kroos throughout the recently concluded January window. The move did not materialise then but the fans will be happy to know that the club are expected to pursue him over the upcoming summer window. It is no secret that Jose Mourinho is keen on boosting his forces in the midfield area and to do that, he has identified Kroos as a priority target.

One might argue that Kroos is a key player for the reigning European champions and that they will not agree to a sale in the first place. While that is true to an extent, the fact is that Los Blancos have had a forgettable season this time.

To make things better, they are determined to rebuild their squad in the summer, which would see them sanction sales for a few of their top players as well. Hence, it might not be all that tough for United to actually acquire Kroos’ signature and the deal looks quite plausible.

Moreover, there is absolutely no doubt that United are in dire need of a new midfielder in the summer. With Michael Carrick set to retire and Marouane Fellaini’s future uncertain, Mourinho will be left with a serious shortage of depth in the middle of the park.

He will still have the likes of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and the influential Nemanja Matic as his first-choice options but considering the fact that they will be looking to make a serious title challenge next season, the Red Devils will need an experienced and a powerful midfielder like Kroos.

Given the 28-year-old’s skills, he is exactly what United need. In the game against Tottenham Hotspur, Pogba’s inability to sit deep and adhere to defensive duties was harshly highlighted. Meanwhile, Ander Herrera has just been floating by this season and due to this, a lot of pressure has been dumped on Matic. In Kroos, they will get a midfielder who is a holding passer – somebody who can ideally occupy the space between Matic and Pogba in the centre.

Thus, given a choice, Manchester United must do all they can to land Kroos. He is creative, powerful and reads the game quite well to adapt to the situation accordingly – which is more than what one can say about most United midfielders at present. That said, Kroos will not come cheap as his market value is £72m. So the Red Devils have to break the bank once more, if they are to land the German. If they do that, Kroos can undoubtedly boost their forces in the midfield area.
