Another game, another heavy defeat for Fulham! They just can’t stop leaking goals this season, can they?
The Cottagers’ recent defeat came at the hands of Arsenal at the Emirates on the New Year’s Day, although the 4-1 thrashing was a harsh pill to digest for Claudio Ranieri, as his side created a lot of chances. Ranieri was let down by his team’s poor finishing and had Fulham taken their chances, the result could have been different.
But on the whole, the defence remains Fulham’s Achilles heel and Ranieri needs to act swiftly to stop the rut. The January transfer window gives Ranieri an ideal chance to stamp his authority over his team to help the west London club avoid relegation from the top-flight.
The Fulham chief needs to bring in a few reinforcements to try and energise his squad. A central defender should be at the top of Ranieri’s list following another dismal defensive performance in the Premier League.
To solve their defensive woes, the Cottagers must target Hannover 96 centre-back, Waldemar Anton.
The 22-year-old has developed into one of the top young defenders in Germany. The Uzbekistan-born German has impressed in the Bundesliga this season, managing 17 appearances for Hannover. He was a mainstay in Hannover’s promotion to the Bundesliga a couple of years ago and has been an ever-present figure since.
Standing at 6ft 2in, Waldemar Anton is a physically strong, robust and a no-nonsense defender who is a central defender by trade but can also play in front of the back four.
The German is a top tackler and relies more on positioning than pace. He can pick out a pass, bring the ball out from the back with utmost comfort and is a real leader.
Anton’s towering frame makes him an asset at both ends of the pitch. His game-reading abilities belie his age and despite being a defender, the 22-year-old is an excellent finisher in front of the goal. Furthermore, his ability to play in front of the defence and at right-back offers good versatility to the team.
Fulham’s defence is currently crying out for a leader and Anton would be the right fit for the team. His presence and positivity in the dressing room will play a significant role in keeping the group tightly knit together.
It is, therefore, a no-brainer for Fulham to sign one of the Bundesliga’s brightest young talents this month.
