Former President bashes Real Madrid and Backs Manchester United in the De Gea Transfer Saga

Former Real Madrid President Roman Calderon has come out and bashed Real Madrid for being sloppy in the David de Gea transfer saga. Calderon has blamed Real Madrid for being sloppy in signing the deal and opined that the club should have approached Manchester United earlier in the transfer window.

David De Gea

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Sports Breakfast show, Ramon Calderon said Someone said here [in Spain] that it [the late negotiation] was a planned strategy of Manchester United, trying to harm Real Madrid’s image in revenge for what happened with [Sergio] Ramos. But if you read the statement of Man U, they say the first and only offer they received was lunchtime of the 31st, the last day [of the Spanish transfer window]. After two months of talking about this [deal], with De Gea in the stands and Man U quite upset about that, the clubs didn’t talk? I can’t imagine that, but it’s what they said. Real Madrid should have given up, not gone to the papers, going public with what happened. That is sloppy work.

Calderon, who signed Ruud Van Nistelrooy from Manchester United in 2006 also expressed his shock that two such successful football clubs, working with world football’s most famous agent, could fail to agree a deal in time.

It’s very surprising, taking into account two of the biggest clubs in the world were involved in this and also the smartest agent I’ve ever met, [Jorge] Mendes was in the middle. Both clubs knew quite well the mechanism of transfers,” he added.
