Everton opinion: Should the Toffees sign Thomas Meunier?

According to a report from French publication GFFN, Everton have retained their previous interest in Paris Saint-Germain’s Belgian full-back Thomas Meunier.

The report reveals that the Toffees were keen on the 27-year-old back in January when the French champions were discussing a possible deal for midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

Both deals failed to materialise in the winter transfer window but Everton are still keen on bringing the Belgian to Goodison Park in the summer but the Toffees will have to shell out a hefty €30million to acquire his services.

Everton have had their issues in right full-back, with both Jonjoe Kenny and Seamus Coleman struggling in Marco Silva system. Coleman has regained his form in recent games but Everton will need to bring in an upgrade to at least match the brilliance of Lucas Digne on the opposite flank.

The Frenchman has arguably been Everton’s best player this season, having directly contributed to 8 goals in the Premier League so far.

The Toffees’ attack has been reliant on the left flank, thanks to Digne’s brilliance this season and the addition of an equally good right-back will bring balance to their whole squad.

Thomas Meunier is a fantastic option for Marco Silva’s side next season and the Toffees should make a move for him, despite the hefty asking price. Meunier could potentially have a similar impact to Digne for Everton, which would automatically make Everton serious contenders for a top-seven finish.

Meunier is a brilliant full-back who possesses immense experience in his career so far. The 27-year-old has played over 300 games for club and country so far and that will be a hugely important factor in a league as tough as the Premier League.

Meunier is fantastic in attack and has the ability to ping brilliant crosses in the box. The Belgian’s ability to link up with the winger in front of him or with someone in midfield to get in behind the opposition defence makes him a huge threat.

Defensively, Meunier’s positioning is one of the best in his position. The former Brugge defender’s intelligence and reading of the game helps him to be at the right place at the right time, which will be a huge asset for the Toffees if they sign him next season.

Conclusion

Everton will find a fantastic balance in their squad if they sign Thomas Meunier in the summer. The Belgian’s class and experience will be hugely beneficial for them next season and they should make a move for him in the summer.
