Enough is enough: Why Liverpool must offload this £40,000-a-week superstar in January

Why it is high time for Jurgen Klopp to offload Alberto Moreno

Liverpool made an emphatic start to their Premier League campaign, thumping West Ham United 4-0. Jurgen Klopp’s men return to the Premier League this week when the Reds travel to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace.

Klopp made a number of additions in the off-season, addressing key areas in the squad. The Merseyside club now possess a wide range of options to deploy across the field. One particular area that cried for attention over the last two years was Liverpool’s left-back department.

But over the previous year, the rise of Andy Robertson has seen those issues diminish. In fact, the only thing that diminished faster than Liverpool’s left-back problems were Alberto Moreno’s first-team hopes.

At the start of the previous season, Moreno had finally found some form after a slew of inconsistent displays. But the left-back soon succumbed to an injury, allowing Robertson to make his way into the team. Since then, the Spaniard has barely seen the green field.

During his time at the club, Moreno has largely been a hit and miss player. He started out his career in impressive fashion, scoring a goal in his second league game against Tottenham Hotspur. He was an exciting talent going forward.

But that’s what came back to haunt the former Sevilla defender. Moreno seemed to lack awareness and positional play, often getting caught out of position up front when the opposition initiated a counter.

The Spaniard, who currently earns wages in the region of £40,000-a-week, lacked the ability to pick his moments to charge forward, making him a defensive liability at most times. This saw Liverpool’s defence conceding a number of goals through the left flank. In fact, once teams recognized Moreno’s weakness, it helped them single him out to wreak havoc.

Although Moreno makes a couple of vital interceptions every now and then, the Spaniard is quite prone to making silly tackles.

Andy Robertson came into the side and pretty much nailed down his spot at the club. There’s no way Moreno can see himself feature regularly again and that’s why Klopp should offload the full-back in January.

Liverpool can deploy Joe Gomez at left-back if needed. Furthermore, even James Milner is capable of filling the role. Once Dejan Lovren is back, Gomez could be utilized as a second-choice left-back. Moreno’s performances for the club have been far too poor for far too long and it is about time for him to leave.
