Enough is enough: It’s high time Klopp offloads this £40,000-a-week Liverpool flop

Why it is high time Jurgen Klopp offloads Alberto Moreno

It was another disastrous outing for Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno, who endured a dreadful night against Chelsea in the League Cup. The Spaniard is proving to be more of a liability than a resource in this squad and it would be best if Jurgen Klopp chooses to offload him.

Moreno arrived from Sevilla in 2014 and made a bright start to his Liverpool career, scoring a superb goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League as well. But the left-back slowly started to show fragility and sloppiness at the back.

The 26-year-old, who currently earns £40,000-a-week, was soon responsible for a number of goals that went in from his wing. Moreno’s performance started dropping at a rapid rate and the former Sevilla defender soon found himself on the bench after Andrew Robertson’s rise to prominence last season.

The Spaniard is often caught high up the field and fails to track back in time. When he does manage to do so, Moreno is seen lunging into tackles dangerously. It was another typical performance from Moreno against the Blues in midweek. He was easily beaten by Victor Moses for much of the game before Eden Hazard came on as a substitute to torment him even further.

The Belgian effortlessly rounded Moreno and nutmegged him in his own box before unleashing a powerful shot into the bottom corner. The Blues’ first goal also came via a free-kick from the left-hand side, although it wasn’t the Spaniard’s fault.

However, Moreno was too easy to beat on the night. There’s no denying that Maurizio Sarri would have targeted his weakness and perfectly exploited it. The Blues seemed to work everything to through Liverpool’s left channel and often found the ball arrive into the box.

Nathaniel Clyne had a much more positive night but surely, that should be the last for Moreno. An easy scapegoat to target, Liverpool definitely missed Robertson’s secure presence at the back. The Scot is a hard man to beat and has rarely dropped his game since taking up the reins. He is the epitome of consistency and quality in a single package.

There’s no chance Alberto Moreno can return to Klopp’s XI with a poor performance like that. He has proven to be a liability in this team and there is no doubt managers will further target his weakness in games.

It would be best for Klopp to offload him in January and bring in a more reliable second choice left-back to offer cover and support.
