Derby County signing this highly-rated 20-year-old would be a brilliant coup by Cocu

Derby County opinion – Rams in for Tom Bayliss – Good move?

According to a report in Examiner, Derby County are among few clubs who are interested in signing Coventry City midfielder Tom Bayliss this summer.

Newly-relegated Huddersfield Town and newly-promoted Aston Villa are also in the race to sign the prodigious young talent. The 20-year-old has been tracked by a host of clubs in the Championship and the Premier League since he burst onto the scene two seasons ago. (h/t Examiner)

Coventry have made it clear that there has been no incoming bids on the table for the midfielder so far. However, they are aware of the speculations around him and would think about selling the player if an offer comes. (h/t Examiner)

With Derby still potentially looking to make transfer dealings ahead of the start of the season under new boss Phillip Cocu (h/t Derby Telegraph), they could do with a player of Bayliss’ quality in their ranks. Here’s why they should sign the youngster:

Bayliss could fill the void left by Mount and Wilson

Predominantly a central midfielder who can play the box-to-box role, Tom Bayliss is a versatile midfield player who is capable of operating as a defensive midfielder and as a wide midfielder.

During the course of the 2018/19 season, which wasn’t his best according to his high standards, the 20-year-old played 38 league games, scored three goals and assisted three. He played in all of the above-mentioned positions.

In terms of his attributes, Bayliss is a good passer of the ball, is physically strong, has a good turn of pace to surprise the opposition players, can dribble past people in tight areas and does put a foot in when required.

So at such a young age, he has mastered a lot of parts of his game, which is an achievement in itself. For that reason, Derby County, who are without their two main midfield assets, Harry Wilson and Mason Mount, could do with the Coventry man this summer.
