Crystal Palace re-signing their former youth star would be a welcome move by Roy Hodgson

Crystal Palace opinion: Why the Eagles should re-sign Nathaniel Clyne?

According to a report from Football.London, Crystal Palace are interested in re-signing Nathaniel Clyne from Liverpool this summer.

The 28-year-old defender is surplus to requirements at Liverpool and he was recently farmed out on loan to Bournemouth. He spent the second half of last season with the Cherries, making 15 appearances across all competitions.

The emergence of academy star Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield has seen Nathaniel Clyne lose his place at right-back under Jurgen Klopp. That coupled with injury problems saw Clyne manage just five appearances for Liverpool before joining Bournemouth on loan in January.

Now that the 28-year-old has fallen down the pecking order under Klopp at Liverpool, Crystal Palace should bring Clyne to Selhurst Park this summer.

The Eagles could lose first-choice right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who has been a subject of a big-money bid from Manchester United.

Wan-Bissaka enjoyed his breakthrough campaign last term under Roy Hodgson and was one of the standout performers for the south Londoners, managing 35 Premier League appearances.

The 21-year-old defender won Palace’s Player of the Year award and with Manchester United having shown eagerness in signing him this summer, it is possible Wan-Bissaka could end up at Old Trafford ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

Losing one of last season’s star performers in Wan-Bissaka would be a big blow for Roy Hodgson. However, Clyne should be a direct replacement for the young defender.

Clyne is a product of Palace’s academy, making his senior debut for the club in 2008. He went on to make a further 121 appearances for the club before leaving to join Southampton.

He signed for Liverpool from Southampton in 2015 and was the undisputed first-choice right-back at the club until injury problems relegated him to a fringe role at Liverpool.

Due to injury problems, the 14-cap England international may have lost some pace and dynamism, but he still has a lot left in his tank to offer at the highest level.

In his loan spell with Bournemouth, the right-back showed he has fully recovered from the injuries that ruined the 2017-18 campaign for him. After losing his place in Klopp’s starting XI, Clyne might be tempted to return where he began his career.

Verdict

Clyne has hit his prime at 28 and if Palace manage to sign him this summer, Hodgson and his team could enjoy the right-back’s best years.
