Wolves opinion: Ruben Neves vs Morgan Sanson stat comparison

According to a report from the Guardian, Wolves are ready to splurge out a mammoth £36.5 million on Marseille’s Morgan Sanson. The Frenchman has been an incredible asset for the Ligue 1 outfit and the report reveals that Wolves are prepared to break their transfer record to acquire his services in the summer.

Sanson would ideally be a replacement for Ruben Neves who has constantly been linked with a move away from the club. Reports of Neves costing £100million forced Manchester City out of the race for the Portuguese in the summer.

However, if the report on Sky Sports is to be believed, Liverpool are the latest club in the hunt for Ruben Neves after Jurgen Klopp’s assistant Pep Lijnders revealed that the 22-year old interests the Reds.

Ljinders worked with Neves back in their time at Porto and the duo’s relationship could give Liverpool the boost in their chase.

Ruben Neves has been an integral part of Nuno Espirito Santo’s side and losing him would be a blow. However, Sanson is a brilliant player in his own right and here’s how his numbers fare when put against the Portuguese’s.

Offensive numbers

Morgan Sanson has scored 4 goals and has provided 3 assists in 23 starts for Marseille this season. The 24-year-old averages 1.1 shots at goal, 0.7 key passes, 40.8 total passes and 3.4 long balls per game with a healthy passing accuracy of 82.8%.

The Frenchman’s ball retention is a bit of a letdown, having been dispossessed 1.5 times per game and having 1.9 unsuccessful touches per game. (WhoScored)

Ruben Neves has scored 3 goals and has provided 2 assists in 28 starts for Wolves this season. The Portuguese sensation averages 2.2 shots at goal, 0.8 key passes, 54.6 total passes and a staggering 6.2 long balls per game with over 80% passing accuracy.

The 22-year-old’s ball control is brilliant, averaging just 0.8 unsuccessful touches per game and having been dispossessed just 0.8 times as well. (WhoScored)

Verdict: Ruben Neves

Defensive numbers

Ruben Neves averages 2.2 tackles, 2.2 interceptions, 1.1 clearances 0.6 blocks and 0.9 successful aerial duels won per 90 minutes so far this season.

The Wolves star also averages just 1.1 fouls per game in the defensive midfield role and has been dribbled past 1.5 times per game this season. (WhoScored)

Sanson averages 2.3 tackles per game, 1.4 interceptions, 0.4 clearances and 0.7 successful aerial duels won per game so far this campaign. The 24-year-old has committed more fouls and has been dribbled past more times than Neves this season. (WhoScored)

Verdict: Ruben Neves

Conclusion

Ruben Neves is far superior to Morgan Sanson in terms of numbers and it would be a massive loss to Wolves if the former leaves in the summer.

However, despite Sanson not being as good as the Portuguese man statistically, he is still a fine footballer who would do a decent job for Nuno Santo’s side next season if signed.
