Chelsea 2-2 Swansea City: Five talking points

The Champions of England got off to a rather surprising start in their quest to defend the title, Chelsea took on Swansea in their opening game of the season and it was the Blues who first scored thanks to a wicked free-kick by Oscar. Swansea though are not to be taken lightly and it was new signing Andre Ayew who equalised after a bit of a scrap in the penalty box. Chelsea took the lead once again thanks to a deflected goal by Willian which looped over Fabianski’s head but Swansea were given a lifeline when Thibaut Courtois saw red for bringing down Bafetimbi Gomis in the penalty box, the Swansea striker got up and scored the penalty to give the Swans a point at Stamford Bridge.

The game was exciting to watch and Swansea could feel a little unlucky not to have gotten more from the game, especially with Chelsea having to play a chunk of the game with 10-men. We look at the five major talking points from the game.

Chelsea forgot to pick up the Cech

Thibaut Courtois had a nightmare of a game against Swansea, he got sent off and awarded a penalty to Swansea, which saw the game tied at 2-2. Asmir Begovic got a chance to play in goal as he was brought in as a substitute for Oscar but the biggest issue would have been the mistakes of Courtois. Should Chelsea have kept hold of Petr Cech for one more season?

Ayew could be the signing of the season

We said it before and well we say it again, it is quite a coup for Swansea to sign Andre Ayew, especially on a free and if anyone had doubts about his ability, those were put to bed by his display. Ayew was simply fantastic against Chelsea, drifting and linking up with Gomis in attack. He scored a well taken goal in the Chelsea penalty box and looks set to be one of the signings of the season.

Chelsea need attacking impetus

Diego Costa might not be fully fit but he started the game for Chelsea and was his battling self again but when Chelsea needed some support they brought on Radamel Falcao and he looked highly out of place once again. This probably was an off day for Chelsea but the second half saw them wither away in attack, even the likes of Fabregas and Hazard had a tough time to get into the game, hopefully for Chelsea fans this was just a random event and nothing too serious.

Ivanovic had an off day

Jefferson Montero had one of his best games in a Swansea shirt, he was brilliant in attack and made veteran Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic look like an amateur for a lot of the game. Montero harried and hustled the Serbian and Ivanovic looked out of place in defence and that rarely happens for one of the best right-backs in the game.

Chelsea were lucky to get a point

Swansea might have been happy with a point had that been offered at the start of the game but playing against the Champions, who are down to 10-men and you have just equalised, you would expect the Swans to be a little bit more lethal in attack and could have won the game. Gary Monk would be happy with his first ever point against Chelsea but he could have gotten three.
