Why signing Troy Deeney could be a masterstroke by Cardiff City

Premier League newcomers Cardiff City are targeting Watford captain Troy Deeney to bolster their attack for the upcoming season. Manager Neil Warnock is keen to strengthen the depth in his forward line, in order to add more goals.

The Welsh club currently have Denmark U-21 international Kenneth Zohore, who is battling with Danny Ward and Gary Madine for the centre-forward spot. However, getting Deeney could be a brilliant move by the club.

Deeney is a leader at Watford and has been impressive at the Vicarage Road since his arrival in 2010. The 30-year-old has netted 109 goals in 305 appearances for the club, helping them gain promotion in 2015. He has led them by example in the past three seasons at the top-level.

The experience and know-how that Deeney has of English football at all levels of the game are second to none. He came through the lower ranks and got promoted to reach a massively high-level at Watford. The 30-year-old is a typical gutsy and tenacious striker who doesn’t give up easily.

His ruthlessness in front of goal is something Cardiff City could benefit from. Having scored over 100 goals for Watford, with 28 of them in three seasons at the Premier League, one can imagine his propensity to be a nuisance for the defenders.

Deeney’s physicality aids him to shrug off and dominate centre-backs with ease. He also exhibits a high work-rate by pressing higher up the pitch and not giving time on the ball for the opposition. Hence, the striker is a proper inspiration for his teammates to perform at a higher level all the time.

It is clear to see why Warnock is keen to buy Deeney and strengthen his forward line which needs to score goals to stay in the Premier League. Cardiff scored 69 goals in 46 championship games last season, at an average of 1.5 per game. It is quite a low number given the fact that things get tougher in the Premier League.

The three strikers which Warnock has at his disposal scored just 13 of the 69 goals last campaign. Hence, getting Deeney will be a masterstroke by the manager.
