Cardiff City signing this richly experienced 109-goal star would be just the push they need to get promoted

Why Cardiff City must do everything possible to sign Glenn Murray

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, Cardiff City are plotting a swoop for Brighton striker Glenn Murray.

Glenn Murray, 35, has proved a huge hit with fans on the south coast having netted 109 goals in 261 games, including an impressive tally of 25 Premier League goals in the last two seasons.

He currently has just one year left on his current deal at Brighton and could well be prepared to drop down a level to work under Neil Warnock, who is known to be a big fan of the striker’s abilities, the report add.

Cardiff are pushing for an immediate return to the Premier League after suffering relegation last season.

The Bluebirds signed German striker Robert Glatzel from Bundesliga Two club Heidenheim on Tuesday, 24 hours after the arrival of Gavin Whyte from Oxford United. They have also added the likes of goalkeeper Joe Day, centre-back Curtis Nelson and midfielder Will Vaulks.

One of the main reasons for the south Welsh club’s relegation from the Premier League was lack of goals.

The fact that their top scorers, Bobby Reid and on-loan midfielder Victor Camarasa, found the net just five times documents where things went wrong for Warnock’s side. Regardless of the additions of Robert Glatzel and Gavin Whyte, Cardiff need more firepower up top.

To put things into perspective, Glenn Murray would be a brilliant buy for the Bluebirds.

The 35-year-old has volumes of experience in English football and was part of the Brighton side that won promotion from the Championship during the 2016/17 campaign, where he netted 23 goals in 45 league appearances that season.

Despite his age, Murray’s record in the past few years has shown that he is still a reliable goalscorer at the highest level. His 13 Premier League goals single-handedly kept Brighton in the Premier League last season.

The former Bournemouth man has an excellent record in the Championship as well, meaning he clearly would come to Wales with a top pedigree in front of the goal.

Neither Murray has the pace to stretch defences nor can he run the channels very effectively but his ability to hold the ball up, link play with the attackers and aerial presence would make him absolutely tailor-made in Warnock’s system at the Cardiff City Stadium.

There’s no doubting that he will be able to fill the sizeable void left by Kenneth Zohore.

Verdict

There will be a weight of expectation on Murray’s shoulders if he signs for the Bluebirds.

All in all, the 35-year-old’s goals could be vital in determining the success of Cardiff City’s season, who will look to bounce back at the first attempt.
