Bournemouth need to sort out the future of Asmir Begovic before the deadline

According to the Daily Mail, Bournemouth shot-stopper Asmir Begovic has made it clear that he wants a way out of the club before the European transfer deadline of September. 

The 32-year-old Bosnian international is clearly down the pecking order at the Vitality Stadium, with Cherries manager Eddie howe preferring young Englishman Aaron Ramsdale between the sticks in the Premier League since the start to the new campaign. 

Begovic made 24 appearances for Bournemouth in the Premier League last season but a series of lacklustre displays saw him lose his No.1 position to veteran Artur Boruc.

The club’s goalkeeping situation looked far from settled at the start of the ongoing campaign but Ramsdale has done more than a decent job between the sticks thus far, leaving Begovic lost in the cold as the third-choice keeper on the south coast. 

And, as per the report, the former Chelsea man has admitted that he had a fall-out with Eddie Howe over his lack of playing time in recent months, with his somewhat strained relationship with the manager casting major doubts over his future at the club. 

Despite Howe insisting that the 32-year-old’s omission from the matchday squads in the Premier League is not a permanent measure and he still has a chance to win his place back as the No.1, Begovic doesn’t seem to like the situation and the Bosnian is apparently pushing for an exit, the Daily Mail understands. 

Begovic’s doubts over his future at the Vitality Stadium would have been accentuated by Howe’s decision to hand Mark Travers a start in the EFL Cup fixture against Forest Green Rovers.

The veteran might have anticipated his first taste of action this term in the midweek clash but Travers’ heroics in the penalty-shootout victory justified the manager’s call. 

To put things into perspective, Asmir Begovic’s future at Bournemouth doesn’t look all that promising and the Cherries should come to a solution and make a settlement which would suit all parties involved.

He still has three years remaining on his current contract, which is likely to put the club in a strong negotiating position should any potential suitor come calling. 

Howe is apparently not prepared to entrust him with the No.1 role any longer after he struggled to pull off some rather straightforward saves in the Premier League last season.

The manager’s preference for homegrown British stars is hardly a secret and with England U-21 international Aaron Ramsdale making his mark in the first-team, Begovic is going to find it difficult to work his way back into the picture. 

The presence of the hugely experienced Boruc and promising Travers in the ranks is not going to make the 32-year-old’s job any easier and a potential loan deal could also sort out the matter for all parties if the Cherries are reluctant to offload him permanently.

With that in mind, Bournemouth need to be decisive and make a call on his future before the deadline, given that it would hardly make any sense for the club to pay him wages for doing next to nothing.
