Sunderland missed the opportunity to climb out of the relegation zone and they missed several opportunities to get a point. Jack Rodwell had their best chance of the game but Adrian made a brilliant save to keep West Ham in front. Rodwell put the ball in the net at the second attempt but he handled it in the build-up.

Rodwell had another good chance however he put the ball over the bar after a fantastic goal-saving tackle from right-back Sam Byram. Jermain Defoe put his shot wide of the post after a mistake from the West Ham defence. Andy Carroll smashed a volley off the cross-bar after return from injury as a substitute. Here we rate the performances of the West Ham players.
