Arsenal Will Struggle With Squad Depth As The Season Progresses

Share

Arsenal seem to be having a blast of a season. A season which started off with a defeat at home to Aston Villa has changed drastically since then. With seven consecutive victories – including Champions League qualification, important victories against Spurs and Stoke has allowed Arsenal fans to forget about their summer transfer window dismay’.

Having defeated Stoke 3-1 at home, the Gunners stay at the top of the table currently tied with Tottenham. However, the season is still fresh with miles to go before thinking of a possible title challenge or for that matter an FA or Capital One cup. It is beyond the shadow of a doubt that Arsenal are in the prime form at the moment, but Stoke’s performance this weekend has overshadowed the team’s winning feat and there are some core issues still needed to be sorted out at the earliest. Theo Walcott being withdrawn from the squad just five minutes prior to the kickoff and allowing German youngster Serge Gnabry to make his Premier League debut instead, was a visible shortcoming of Arsenal’s strategy, which might cost them a lot in their future endeavors in the League.

The five games that the Gunners have played, only Tottenham was a respectable side that could have challenged the Gunners’ potential to the maximum. With the likes of City, United, Chelsea and Liverpool to play, the season cannot be judged. And former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the Gunners need to prove themselves title contenders by winning the important games against the top clubs. Quoted by Skysports, Carragher said:

“I think it’s going to be a season of up and down results, but Arsenal are top of the table and deservedly so. They’ve got to go and do something against Man City for everyone to sit up and take notice.” said Jamie Carragher.

Although Arsene Wenger was subjected to criticisms from different nooks and corners in the Transfer Window episode, the signing of Mesut Ozil has certainly made critics take a step back, and why not? A player of Ozil’s caliber is likely to be an asset for any team.

“I think they might fall short in regards to their depth of squad. If we talk about Arsene Wenger was getting a lot of criticism in the transfer window, but the Mesut Ozil signing seems to have put that to bed, because everyone is so happy with him arriving.

“But that might hide numbers in other areas where they’re weak like you saw with Theo Walcott being missing today [Sunday]. They still got the three points but over a long season you might think they’ll come short.”

In other news, Arsenal have announced their profit details. The Gunners have made a £47 million pound profit on the sale of Robin Van Persie and Alex Song. The club simultaneously invested a whopping £58.7 million pound in buying new players and entering into contracts.

Arsenal who have been a regular qualifier in the Champions League has provided them a steady source of revenue. In fact Arsenal is one of the most financially stable clubs over the past few years.
