Arsenal and Chelsea Stars Dominate the Top 5 EPL Stars From Champions League This Midweek

Share
Willian

The Champions League was back for some brilliant midweek action and with all the English clubs playing, there was a lot to talk about. Chelsea seemed to be getting better as they romped home to a 4-0 win away against Maccabi Tel Aviv; their London rivals Arsenal also did the same with an impressive 3-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb.

There were mixed fortunes for the Manchester teams as City lost against Juventus, but they had already qualified so the result wasn’t much of a consequence but Manchester United missed their chance of making it into the next stage as they were held to a goalless draw at home by PSV. That result leaves United with a bit of a mountain to climb since they have to beat Wolfsburg to guarantee a place in the next round and based on how they played, that would be a tough ask.

Many Manchester United fans were upset by the quality of play by the team despite them dominating possession. Manchester United might have had it a bit tough, but there certainly were a lot of stars on show for the English club in this round and we list out the five players that shone the brightest for the English Premier League.

Willian

The only shining light this season for Chelsea, Willian continued his great form by bagging a goal – another one from a free kick – and by setting up the first goal from a wicked delivery from a corner. Willian is more known for his hard work rather than his attacking ability, in fact, he was often played in the team just to provide some balance and to track back when defending. Willian though has hit another gear this season and with the likes of Hazard, Costa and Fabregas going missing, the Brazilian could well have a lot more to do for the Blues in the latter stages of the season.

Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil

Many criticised the German international’s work-rate for Arsenal, but there is no doubt, he has been the player for the Gunners this season. Ozil was again at his best, not by providing yet another assist but by scoring the first goal, a fine diving header to give Arsenal the lead. He might not be doing a lot of running but his perfect poise and passes certainly makes him one of the players who could be key to Arsenal winning something this season.

Alexis Sanchez

Alexis Sanchez

Sanchez bagged a couple of goals, that wouldn’t be a surprise from the Chilean-based on how much he has given to the Gunners. The forward isn’t just known for his goals but he dynamism and energy he brings to the team. Sanchez is a world-class talent and Arsenal seem to have gotten him for a bargain from Barcelona as he keeps giving more and more to the club.

Joel Campbell

Joel Campbell, Arsenal

Well, Campbell had his best game in an Arsenal shirt since moving to the club in 2011. Of course, a lot of time has been spent away from the team on loan but injuries to many first team players saw him get a chance and he did do his best. Inconsistency is the key for Campbell but he was a threat in the first half for Arsenal and he could pretty well get a chance in the weekend, hopefully, he can replicate this performance for the entire 90 minutes.

Baba Rahman

Baba Rahman

The youngster from Augsburg hasn’t really had much to do for the Blues this season but his performance against Tel Aviv – ok they aren’t the toughest team in the world – should provide some respite from criticism. Rahman was excellent for Chelsea going up the pitch and helping out in the attack, he was brought in to replace Luis Felipe and if he can perform to this level his price tag would seem to be a bargain. Hopefully, he can start for the Blues in a couple of upcoming games to see how well he can do in the league games.
