Joel Matip was among Liverpool’s most consistent defenders in the recently concluded campaign but going forward, he should be used as a rotation player.
The fact that Liverpool are in dire need of a new centre-back was evident in their semi-final matches against AS Roma in the Champions League. Despite leading comfortably in both legs, the Liverpool defence collapsed and gifted Roma two late goals.
Those errors could’ve easily cost the Reds their place at the Champions League final, had it not been for the outstanding attack.
Virgil van Dijk needs a reliable partner, someone who can even push him to the limits and cover for him when he makes a mistake. In a short span of six months, the Dutchman has settled in and worked his magic but Klopp must prioritize signing a new centre-back this summer.
James Tarkowski and Jamal Lascelles are the names currently being linked to Anfield and either one of them would be a good option to partner van Dijk.
