Liverpool reclaimed top spot in the league with an impressive 2-0 win over Chelsea at an atmospheric Anfield. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were the scorers for the home side, who thoroughly deserved to win all three points today.
Maurizio Sarri’s plan was working in the first half though, with the away side closing all the spaces down and thwarting the hosts from creating any clear-cut chances.
Mane came the closest after Ruben Loftus-Cheek lost the ball in the midfield and the Senegalese star was fed in by Salah. But the former couldn’t keep his curling effort on target.
The second half began with the Reds moving the ball quicker and getting closer. Eventually, the deadlock was broken in the 51st minute when Jordan Henderson delivered a delicious cross at the far post for Mane to head into an empty net.
Two minutes later, Virgil van Dijk passed the ball to Salah on the right wing. The Egyptian star picked up possession, cut inside and hit a rapturous shot towards the top corner from 30 yards out to send Anfield into a frenzy. Kepa had no chance to save that.
Chelsea had two great chances in the aftermath of that goal, both of which fell to Eden Hazard. However, the Belgian hit the post with first and Alisson saved the second.
Liverpool then took control of the game with patient possession and defending the last line well.
All in all, it was a deserved win for the Reds, who are now back on top of the table, with an extra game played. If the context is into account, this win would really heap a lot of pressure on Manchester City in their upcoming games.
