‘A Brazilian fan in tears’ – Newcastle United Fans React To Win Over Swansea City + Player Ratings

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez

Newcastle United continued their revival in the Premier League, as they defeated Swansea City 1-0 away at the Liberty Stadium, on Sunday.

After a poor start to the season, the Magpies bounced back with a 3-0 win over West Ham United before the international break and continued their resurgence with the hard-earned win over the Swans, courtesy a late goal from captain Jamaal Lascelles.

The game had gone without a goal for three-quarters of the length, until Lascelles converted Matt Ritchie’s corner in the 76th minute, to hand the Magpies three points. The win sees Newcastle United move into the top half of the table at the tenth position. And here we take a look at how the Newcastle players fared on the day;

Rob Eliott – 7/10

Made a couple of important saves to keep Newcastle in the game and denied Luciano Narsingh late in the game to take home three points.

Javi Manquillo – 6/10

Solid if not spectacular. Defended well for most parts of the game and played Ayoze Perez through on goal in the second period.

Jamaal Lascelles – 9/10

The hero for the Magpies on the day. Made vital contributions at both the ends, making a goal-line clearance, before heading home the winner.

Ciaran Clark – 7/10

Battled hard with the young and powerful Tammy Abraham. Composed under pressure at the back.

Jesus Gamez – 6.5/10

Struggled in the first period, with Swansea enjoying much joy down his side. Improved in the second period. Got forward well at whatever opportunity presented.

Mikel Merino – 7/10

Dove in the box fishing for a penalty. Apart from that blot, was another solid performance from the Spaniard.

Isaac Hayden – 6/10

Booked very early in the game for a foul on Renato Sanches. Gave away the ball, leading to a goal-bound effort from Jordan Ayew in the first-half, but was saved by Elliot. Grew tired and was subbed off.

Newcastle United

Matt Ritchie – 7/10

The birthday boy worked hard for his team and looked the most likely to make things happen. Ended up with the assist for the goal. However, should consider himself slightly lucky for staying on the field for a challenge on Alfie Mawson, very similar to the Sadio Mane incident.

Ayoze Perez – 6/10

A pretty silent day for the Spaniard as he could not have a great impact in attack. There were a few deft touches but missed a chance.

Jacob Murphy – 5/10

Not the full debut that he would have hoped for. Fired a volley over the bar in the first-half and never really looked a threat.

Joselu – 7/10

Always a danger and forced a number of saves from Lukasz Fabianski – came the closest to open the scoring with a glanced header, but the Polish stopper pulled off a magnificent stop.

Substitutes

Christian Atsu – 5/10

Replaced Murphy just before the hour mark. No impact, gave away possession.

Mohamed Diame – 6/10

Came on for Hayden with 20 minutes left. Shored things up in midfield.

Dwight Gayle – NA

Replaced Joselu in the 79th minute. Booked.
