Watford Opinion: Should the Hornets re-sign Steven Berghuis?

Watford have been a surprise package in the Premier League this season. The Hornets are eighth on the table, level on points with seventh-placed Wolves and are very much in the hunt for achieving a Europa League berth.

In Roberto Pereyra, Gerard Deulofeu, Troy Deeney and Will Hughes, Watford have some quality players in the final third. Both Pereyra and Deulofeu have done extremely well this campaign but the Hornets need a prolific right winger to take them to the next level.

The Hornets must re-sign Steven Berghuis this summer. Steven Berghuis, 27, has been in excellent form for Feyenoord this season, bagging 6 goals and 10 assists in 24 Eredivisie games.

The Dutchman failed to adapt to the Premier League after joining from AZ Alkmaar in 2015 but since returning to the Eredivisie in 2017, he has managed to get back his lost mojo.

A classic winger by trade, Berghuis operates with a lot of speed, flair and power. He has a sledgehammer of a left foot with which he has scored a number of belters in the Eredivisie.

With quick feet and lightning pace, the 27-year-old can rip apart defences and is a dangerous presence in the box. He has some impressive tricks up his sleeve, which allow him to get past a player in a flash.

The skilful Dutchman would also provide Watford with a direct threat from counter-attacks.

Although he isn’t known for his defensive duties, Berghuis can change the course of a game with a moment of genius. Adding Berghuis to the likes of Deeney, Pereyra, Deulofeu and Hughes would make Javi Gracia’s side a potent attack capable of destroying any opposition in the Premier League.

He is strong on the ball and has the ability to pick a pass from anywhere on the pitch. A quality crosser of the ball, the former AZ Alkmaar man is also a composed finisher in front of goal.

Berghuis’ direct approach and ability to play in different positions across the frontline would give the tactical Gracia a lot of flexibility in the attack.

Conclusion

Having grown into a fantastic player since leaving Watford, Berghuis deserves another opportunity in the Premier League. And Watford should provide the Dutchman with the chance to shine in England by re-signing him.
