Why Liverpool Should Avoid Signing Quincy Promes And Sign A Centre-half Instead

Liverpool had a steady inception of their 2017-18 season under Jurgen Klopp who sealed a berth in the group stages of the prestigious Champions League campaign defeating TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the playoffs and also secured a commendable 4-0 triumph against Arsenal in a Premier League outing. But their season got derailed since the closure of the summer transfer window as they were thrashed 5-0 by Manchester City later.

The defence has been a long-term issue which is yet to be resolved, moreover they have started wasting goal scoring opportunities, which are resulting in undesirable outcomes, both in the domestic and European fixtures. The Reds have only managed one win in the last 7 outings and have already been knocked out from the League Cup. Defensive frailty is there, but the lack of goal conversion is troubling them even more.

The deadline day signing of versatile Englishman Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has gone all wrong for Liverpool as the former Arsenal winger is yet to find his feet at Anfield.

Once again, reports have emerged about Liverpool’s significant January transfer plan, where they will still pursue Van Dijk. The Liverpool-Van Dijk saga is a well documented one and it is better that we speak less about it. Also, they are reportedly eyeing a swoop for his fellow countryman Quincy Promes, who was previously being monitored last winter.

The 25-year-old attacker is currently in his fourth successive campaign with Spartak Moscow, one of Liverpool’s Champions League group stage opponents, and has already netted 52 times in 103 outings for the reigning Russian champions.

The £18m rated Promes is known for his goal-scoring attribute from wide areas but the Reds already have two top-notch wingmen in the form of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who have been in scintillating form for Jurgen Klopp’s side so far. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain deserves more time to settle down in new circumstances whereas Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino, Liverpool’s Brazilian duo, are also capable of playing on the wings. Promes is a decent resource, but the Reds have already got enough quality attackers who will be preferred over Promes in the starting line-up.

The Dutchman, thus, is not a requirement at this moment and Klopp’s focus should be on acquiring one centre-back who will fix things up at the back for Liverpool, as they have been vulnerable and error-prone for seasons now. Klopp must get his priorities right in the January transfer window or Liverpool’s season is going for a toss.
