5 Transfer Blunders From 2015: Chelsea And Manchester United Leading The Way

The January transfer window is upon us and that only means that all the Premier League clubs will be expecting to invest in their squads and ensure that they do not lose out on any key players during the fag end of the season.

However, there have been many stories about great transfer dealings in the past in this window; Luis Suarez to Liverpool is one of the highlights from the window that most footballers don’t really like. There have been a lot of great transfers this season as well, Kante to Leicester, but here are five of the biggest transfer blunders from 2015.

5. Juan Cuadrado

The highly rated Colombian, one of the stars in the Serie A for Fiorentina was a prized asset and it was Chelsea that signed the winger.

What Chelsea and Mourinho got was an attacker of the highest calibre, what Cuadrado ended up going was something else. Mourinho knew it would take the attacker time to adjust to England but his time in the Premier League was filled with abject performances and he was then loaned to Juventus at the start of this season, despite moving to Chelsea in February 2015, certainly not the best transfer so far.

4. Radamel Falcao

When Falcao failed during his spell at Manchester United, everyone knew he was bound to head back to Monaco and resurrect his career. Jose Mourinho however, saw something in Falcao and brought him on loan to Chelsea where the Colombian has spent more time out of the team than playing in it.

It was a gamble worth taking but it hasn’t worked out for either Mourinho or Falcao and with Hiddink in the side, Falcao might have a lifeline to prove his quality but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him not perform that well under the new manager either.

3. Memphis Depay

The expensive signing who was supposed to light it up at Manchester United has certainly failed to do so. The Dutch winger move from PSV in the summer after a brilliant spell in Holland but has rarely shown his ability and looks out of place and not up to pace in England.

He is still young and could well end up being one of the best wingers in the history of Manchester United, a tough task for him it is but under Louis van Gaal, this is another transfer that hasn’t gone all that well, especially for the amount of money spent.

2. Baba Rahman

Another Chelsea player making this list, the Augsburg defender was signed for a whopping £20 million but has rarely played for the Blues. Jose Mourinho might rate him as one of the best left-backs but Rahman does look out of pace in England.

Chelsea have spent a lot of money in the window and this has to be one of their biggest blunders, it isn’t that Rahman is a bad player, it is just that he probably wasn’t ready for this league or needs more game time, which he could get under Hiddink.

1. Patrick Bamford

Chelsea seem to dominate this list, while there could have been the inclusion of Bastian Schweinsteiger or Christian Benteke as well, the farce that has been regarding Patrick Bamford at Chelsea and then at Crystal Palace cannot be ignored.

The Championship’s top scorer last season was expected to at least have a bit-part role at Chelsea but he was loaned out to Crystal Palace for the possibility of playing more games, instead, he cut short his year-long spell after not even starting one game for the Eagles and now hopes to do something positive under Hiddink at Chelsea.
