The Bundesliga is filled with Scandinavian, South American and German talent. Some of them blossom out to become world beaters, such as Mario Gotze who scored the infamous winner against Argentina just more than a year ago, while some fail to live up to the expectations like ex-Bayern Munich player, Breno. Remember the name? No right? Precisely my point. Last I checked, about a year ago, Breno was on probation from prison, he gets to train on a daily basis, but he lives the nights back in jail. There are both extremes, but let us not get to such negativity and concentrate on who could probably blow our minds with their footballing skills and probably make the move to a bigger club next summer.
The first player who comes to mind is from the golden class of 1995 players. He plays for the royal blues from Gelsinkirchen, they go by the name of Schalke 04. Max Meyer is the apple of the eye of every Schalke fan who makes it to the Veltins week-in-week-out and worldwide, he has a pretty good fanbase. Many a number wish this attacking midfielder would make the move to their club as soon as possible. Meyer was part of the 30 man squad who trained before the World Champions’ final 23 rosters was announced for Brazil 2014. Young Max missed out to quality players but as a keen follower of Germany’s domestic league season, I am quite confident he missed out by just slight margins. Last season, we could see glimpses of the star that was Meyer in one of the biggest games ever of his career so far. This was the return leg in the Champions League round of 16. Schalke were trailing to the favorites Real Madrid but inspirational performances by Meyer, Huntelaar, Howedes and Sane gave the then holders of the UCL a tough fight to progress. Fast forward 6 months and Meyer has improved vastly as a player. One can expect performances such as that night in almost every game from this German who will, of course, be a key member in Schalke’s fight for Champions League spots after they missed out this season.
The next player who is sure to raise more than a few eyebrows in awe would be Bayern Munich’s central midfielder from Denmark. He is called as Pierre Emile Hojbjerg. The Danish international is deep lying playmaker/box-box mid. Someone similar to Bastian Schweinsteiger but clearly not up to the Fussballgott’s level but has the potential to reach the same heights. He may find it hard to feature as a starter in the Bundesliga games as often as he did on loan while at Augsburg, but he was recalled with the promise of regular football. One would hope that he gets his minutes on the pitch and we can expect performances that would push Xabi Alonso to fight for a place with the young star. He’s got quite a bit of learning to become mature, but he already showcases the composure of a 25-year-old CM who is in the prime of his game. That’s quite rare and it will be a safe assumption that he can only get better from here if he plays regularly as promised.
Finally, the last player one definitely needs to watch closely is Hoffenheim’s Niklas Sule. Just 19 years old, the German is already a regular name in the starting lineup and is also pushing for a Germany call-up, competing against Rudiger, Badstuber, and Mustafi. He experienced a brilliant second half of last season and even earned himself a contract extension but an ACL injury ruled him out towards the end of the season and on returning back to the first team, Sule will look to build upon the name he has made for himself. Having represented the national team in every level so far, it is not far before Loew makes the decision to call up the young German, with performances such as last season, one could expect it to be around the corner too. Having made a name for himself already, another season as one of the best defenders in the league could earn him a transfer to some of the big boys in the country such as Wolfsburg or Dortmund or probably the biggest of them all, FC Bayern Munich, the dream club for most of Germany’s youth footballers. Much to look forward to from this lad.
It was a tough decision to narrow down to 3 names from a league with many promising young players, but I am confident that these 3 will stand out through the period of 34 games this year and hopefully many more years to come by.
