3 Things We Learned From Liverpool’s Win Over Fulham – Spirit Of Old Is Back

Share

Liverpool scored an injury-time penalty to secure all three points at Craven Cottage after coming from behind twice in a 3-2 away win against Fulham. Here are three things we learned from the game.

1. Liverpool have the spirit of old

Gerrard

There was a time when Liverpool could find the winning goal even in the dying seconds of the game, and one would never doubt a late comeback from the Reds. Those days might just be returning to Anfield. Liverpool went behind twice in the game but they showed tenacity and perseverance, and kept banging on the Fulham door till it opened.

Once they got the equalizer for the second time, it felt as if there was no way that Fulham could hold out for a point, such was the dominance and willingness to take all three points from the Reds. They did manage to turn around a victory from a losing position, and although they did it against the league’s bottom side, they will undoubtedly be better for the experience, and will benefit from it in the run-in.

2. Lewis Holtby might turn out to be the best signing of January

Lewis Holtby

The sort of performances that Lewis Holtby has been putting in for Fulham will undoubtedly leave Tottenham fans scratching their heads in disbelief as to how come Spurs never played him consistently in a central attacking role. After his virtuoso performance against Manchester United in the weekend, he seemed to have carried on his form into this game.

He was superb in possession and tireless without it as he covered almost the entire pitch. His passing and vision were excellent as he picked out runners with long balls time and again on the Fulham counter attacks. While the final product may have been missing, he has shown enough quality in the final third to give Fulham fans hope of survival, and if he continues this level of performance throughout the rest of the games, he will surely be one of the best buys in January, if not the season.

3. Defensive errors might cost Liverpool dear

Defensive errors and Liverpool are becoming synonymous at the moment. Almost every game, they seem to be gifting goals to their opponents by making some error or the other. In fact, both of Fulham’s goals were courtesy of errors from the central defensive pair for Liverpool. Kolo Toure somehow managed to slice the ball in the back of his own net when clearing seemed to be easier option, and then Martin Skrtel knocked the ball down for Kieron Richardson to score from 2 yards out, in what would have been a perfect assist at the other end of the field.

This mistake was the second high profile error the Ivorian has committed in as many weeks, after he passed the ball straight to the feet of Victor Anichebe to score the equalizer in the 1-1 draw at West Brom. Today’s errors take Liverpool’s tally to 30, the highest of any team in the league, and 7 of them have led to goals. Going forward, if they do not sort this out, it might cost them dearly in the big games.
