3 Things We Learned From Cardiff Vs Liverpool: There Is No Stopping SAS, But Defensive Woes Continues

Share

Liverpool put in yet another scoring master class as they overcame a spirited Cardiff City side 6-3 in what was a thrilling match to watch. Here are three things we learned from the game.

There is no stopping SAS

It’s about time it’s written down in stone – there is simply no stopping Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. Over the course of the last couple of weeks, there might have been a few doubts raised whether the partnership was losing effectiveness as the goals seemed to have relatively dried up all of a sudden for the duo. However, today they proved that it’s nigh impossible to keep them quiet.

Some of the interplay between the two was outstanding as they continuously tormented the Cardiff defense. Suarez scored a much deserving hattrick while Sturridge too found the back of the net as the SAS show continued. In fact, Sturridge set up Suarez’s second with a delightful back-flick, while Suarez returned the compliment with an unselfish pass to allow Sturridge to score. With 8 games to go, one can only wonder how many more they will score before the end of the season.

Cardiff will struggle to stay up

Cardiff played some good football in the opening half hour as they went ahead twice, but their failure to keep Liverpool at bay meant that they suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Reds today. The result leaves Cardiff firmly in place, second from bottom, and they have a real fight on their hands till the end of the season if they are to stay up.

They have brought in a few players in January in a bid to enhance the squad and help avoid the drop. So far, they have had little impact as manager Ole Gunnar Solksjaer opted to keep the likes of Kenwyne Jones and Wilfried Zaha on the bench instead of starting with them. He will have to start coming up with some results if Cardiff are to avoid the drop.

Liverpool’s defensive woes continue

Just when one thought Liverpool might be overcoming their defensive frailties with consecutive clean sheets against Southampton and Manchester United, they let in three goals against Cardiff. Once again, poor positioning allowed Cardiff players to sneak in unmarked and for a large part of the first half, it looked as if it would cost Liverpool dearly.

With just 8 games to go till the end of the season, all of them being potential cup finals if Liverpool are to have any chance of winning the Premier League title, Liverpool will need to sort out their problems at the back and fast. They will be coming up against Manchester City and Chelsea later next month and similar defensive showing against them might derail Liverpool’s title ambitions.
