Although Moyes knew he was inheriting the worst defence in the Premier League, he will surely not have expected them to surrender so easily. Despite the defeat, he would be taking the positives out of the game and had his players taken their chances, the scoreline would have been different; thanks to Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes’ string of wonderful saves.
Relegation would be a disastrous prospect for the Hammers given their move to the 66,000-capacity London Stadium last year, and it would also signal another shattering chapter in the Scot’s career following last season’s relegation with Sunderland.
