3 Things David Moyes Needs To Do At West Ham To Come Out Of The Rut They Find Themselves In

David Moyes’ West Ham reign began in defeat as Watford ended their losing run with a 2-0 victory at Vicarage Road on Sunday. Goals from Will Hughes and Richarlison got Watford back to winning ways with manager Marco Silva linked with the vacancy at Everton.

Although Moyes knew he was inheriting the worst defence in the Premier League, he will surely not have expected them to surrender so easily. Despite the defeat, he would be taking the positives out of the game and had his players taken their chances, the scoreline would have been different; thanks to Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes’ string of wonderful saves.

Relegation would be a disastrous prospect for the Hammers given their move to the 66,000-capacity London Stadium last year, and it would also signal another shattering chapter in the Scot’s career following last season’s relegation with Sunderland.

With Leicester next and the size of the task being massive, here are three things Moyes should immediately do to take West Ham out of the mess before time runs out for him.

Sort Out The Problems In Defence

This season, West Ham have conceded 25 goals, which is the highest in the league. There is absolutely no solidity in defence and the number of individual mistakes leading to goals is immense.

The first and foremost thing for Moyes is to fix the defence. David Moyes built his reputation at Everton due to the organisation at the back, which gave the right shape to the team, with proper marking and set pieces being a routine. This is exactly what West Ham need now, in order to have any hope of survival. Further success will come as an added bonus.

Get The Best Out Of Hernandez And Lanzini

West Ham pulled off a coup when they signed Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. Chicharito has already scored 4 goals but the team hasn’t been playing to the Mexican’s strengths.

Chicharito has formed a reputation for being an out-and-out poacher since his time at Manchester United. Moyes knows the matter of fact very well and should use the Mexican to good effect in order to reap rich benefits.

Not only Hernandez, Moyes also has the task of getting the best out of Manuel Lanzini. Lanzini, who the creative hub of West Ham. He has the ability to cut teams open with his guile and quick movement but the Hammers never looked properly set up under Slaven Bilic, to get the best out of Lanzini.

Lanzini has been drifted out wide, which isn’t his natural position. But being the creative force, Moyes should give the Argentine a central position to make him dictate and orchestrate the team’s attacks.

Improve Home Form

It will be important for Moyes to build the Hammers’ season on good home form. A strong home form has always been the basis for a decent season. So if the manager can get few positive results in front of the home fans, then it will help reinvigorate the mood.

The 54-year-old should probably feel lucky to have got another chance at a Premier League club so soon. Now it’s time for him to repay the faith.
