Every transfer window brings with it a fair share of transfer gossip and rumours linking several players and teams with each other. Some of them go through, while the others keep repeating themselves over the subsequent transfer windows until eventually dying down. This time, with the January window coming up, Manchester United have been linked to a host of players, as pressure will be on Jose Mourinho to scan the market and bring in new talents.

The Red Devils have had a fairly inconsistent season so far. They started off on a strong note but faltered in between, only to notch up remarkable wins against Watford and Arsenal. However, the loss against Man City clearly highlighted their inconsistency and this is not enough to nurse their ambitions of a title challenge. United need reinforcements. While there are some players Mourinho must absolutely pursue, here are 3 reported Manchester United targets that the Portuguese can steer clear of.

Mesut Ozil – Arsenal

The German playmaker has been linked with an exit from Arsenal and United have been one of the many clubs interested in him. There is no doubt that Ozil is a creative whiz with the ball at his feet and can tear even the toughest of teams apart with his vision. Unfortunately, though, we don’t get to see those days too often. He is an out-and-out luxury player and can help any team win any game – but he is not consistent. And at this point, United need a player they can count on day in and day out to offset the amount of dependence on a player like Paul Pogba.

Gareth Bale – Real Madrid

Rumours linking the former Tottenham Hotspur man with United simply refuse to die down but perhaps they should. Bale hasn’t been in the best of forms lately and even though his experience might make him seem like an upgrade on their current wide players, it would come at the cost of youngsters like Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard. Moreover, the player is injury-prone and that will prove to be a risk at a time when United need their key players to be in top form.

Ivan Perisic – Inter Milan

Perisic may look like a good addition on paper but when it comes to the essence of his style of play and United’s under Mourinho, there seems to be a disconnect. The Croatian thrives on his lightning speed to do what he does but Mourinho likes his attacking midfielders to work hard and offer defensive support as well. That is something Perisic is not known for. Hence, instead of spending so much to bring a player whose style may or may not suit United, Mourinho could look for options elsewhere.
