Liverpool have confirmed that Jerome Sinclair will join Watford after the two clubs reached an agreement over compensation for the striker. Sinclair, who is the youngest ever player to have played for Liverpool having made his senior debut at the age of 16 years and six days against West Bromwich Albion in September 2012, is out of contract at Anfield having joined the club as a 14-year-old in 2011. Watford and Bournemouth had both been interested in signing him but a statement on Liverpool’s website on Thursday confirmed that Sinclair will move to Vicarage Road for an undisclosed fee. “Liverpool Football Club can confirm that an agreement has been reached with Watford for the transfer of striker Jerome Sinclair,” read the statement.
Things didn’t work out much for the 19 year old striker at Liverpool under Jurgen klopp. His departure drew mixed responses from the Anfield faithful, as some of them were happy to see the back of him, while others thought that his talent could have been tapped and utilized for the future. Moving to Vicarage Road will give his career a new leash of life, but he will have to compete for the starting birth with Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo.
One must not forget that the striker is still only 19 years of age, after making his first appearance for the senior Liverpool team at the age of 16. There is still lots of potential that could be tapped by new Watford manager Walter Mazzarri. He had a good run during his stay at Liverpool, however due to constant managerial changes, he never had chance to shine on a constant basis but at Watford, he will be given enough opportunities to prove himself and even get back involved in the England youth set up.
Although he didn’t get much playing for Liverpool senior team, his time playing for the U18’s was quite fruitful. He even struck a hat-trick in one particular U-18s game against Exeter. His major strengths are composure in front of goal and lighting quick pace. One look at the highlights of his career and we see how he uses his acceleration to get past opponents at will.
