3 Players who Sheffield Wednesday could offload this summer including £10million flop

Sheffield Wednesday did not have the best of the seasons in the EFL Championship this time. The Owls, managed by Jos Luhukay, finished the season in 15th place and will be keen on improving on that result in the upcoming season.

The transfer window will have a major bearing on how things unfold for the Hillsborough outfit come next season. While Luhukay will be expected to bolster his ranks, there will also be some exits from the club in order to open up space for the new members to arrive. With that in mind, here are three players that the Owls should be looking to offload this summer.

Almen Abdi

Signed from Premier League outfit Watford back in the summer of 2016 for a fee around £4million, things haven’t worked out for the 31-year-old Almen Abdi at the club.

The versatile midfielder made just 16 appearances in his first season with the Owls, scoring a solitary goal and saw his game time reduce even more in the 2017/18 campaign.

Abdi finished the season with just seven appearances under his belt, failing to add a single goal or assist.

Having failed to make any sort of impact under both Carlos Carvalhal and Luhukay, Wednesday would be better off letting the Switzerland international go this summer, especially with reports of interest from his boyhood club FC Zurich doing the rounds.

Jordan Rhodes

Another big money signing that hasn’t worked out all that well for the Hillsborough outfit, Jordan Rhodes was signed by the club for a £10million fee in the summer of 2017 despite having seen him struggle for form during a six-month loan spell prior to that.

During his loan spell in the second half of the 2016/17 season, the 28-year-old Scottish striker managed to net just three times and after signing a permanent deal last summer, he did not fare all that better in the 2017/18 campaign either.

Rhodes ended the term with just 5 goals from 31 appearances in the Championship. Despite his past exploits in the Championship, it just hasn’t worked out for Rhodes and Wednesday, and the club should look to cash in on him this summer, amidst interest from Scottish giants Rangers.

Sam Winnall

Given the number of strikers that are already on the books at Hillsborough, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Winnall leave the club on a permanent deal this summer.

The 27-year-old joined the Owls in January 2017 but struggled to make an impact under then manager Carlos Carvalhal.

He spent the 2017/18 campaign on loan with Derby County and had established himself as a key player until a serious knee injury ruled him out of action during the second half of the season.

Sam Winnall

Despite the expiry of his loan spell with the Rams, Winnall has chosen to continue his rehabilitation at the Pride Park instead of returning to his parent club, which might also be an indicator of where the player’s loyalties lie. His injury might complicate matters a bit but the Owls would be better off selling him.
