Liverpool’s 2013-14 EPL campaign has been nothing short of imperious. From outcasts to pace setters in England, Brendan Rodgers’ side currently stand second to Chelsea in the table as they look almost guaranteed for a much awaited Champions League berth for next season. Even the wildest of supporters in the red half of Merseyside wouldn’t have believed this at the start of the season, but to their credit the Reds have been absolutely prolific this season and have set the pace, scoring goals for fun. Rodgers can ill afford to let slip all the good work from this campaign and must look to build on this as a base for next season Premier League Title credentials. Owner John W Henry has already proclaimed to give his manager a 60m transfer kitty for their charge in the league and we here at Soccersouls provide our readers a look at three players that Liverpool need for the coming campaign to fight for the title.
The left back slot remains a perennial problem for the Reds with Jose Enrique missing a majority of the campaign thanks to the spell on the sidelines. John Flanagan has admirably filled in the gap and Glen Johnson too has stepped up to the task whenever asked for, but Liverpool need a permanent solution and should not look any further than Swansea’s 20 year old who has become a key part of the Welsh side ever since the long term injury to Neil Taylor. Despite his tender age, he possesses a calm head on young shoulders and has a great understanding of the game as a whole. His age and familiarity with Rodgers will make him an ideal purchase instead of Southampton’s Luke Shaw who will cost 3 times more than him. Make no mistake, his marauding runs up front will only add to Liverpool’s attacking dimension.
As Steven Gerrard has moved more into a deeper role, his deployment as a regista stems from Rodgers’ increasing desire to make his captain control possession and dictate the tempo of game. However there needs to be a destroyer, someone who can stop the opposition build up play. At this current moment, Lucas only fits the bill but his injuries suggest he is well past his sell by date. Porto’s Fernando fits the role perfectly nut the Brazilian recently signed a contract extension to deter away interests from the Premier League. If the Reds do qualify for Europe, they can look to Paris St Germain’s Frenchman Blaise Matuidi to fill the slot. He is brilliant on the ball, has great passing ability and also has a lethal shot from distance. He won’t certainly cheap though but will be worth the splurge of cash in the summer.
As Chris Waddle of the BBC rightly said, ” I would try to find a place in the team for him (Lallana) in the World Cup for England. He gets space, he makes space, he can see a pass, he can go inside and outside of players and he can score a goal himself. He has energy, he can see a pass and he is ideal for international football.” The 25 year old epitomizes Southampton’s superb season and will attract a lot of interests from big clubs in the summer. He has the potential to play out on the left and together with formidable SAS (Suarez and Sturridge), can fire Liverpool to reclaim their lost glory in about two decades running.
