One of the biggest sagas from last year’s Premier League season was whether Antonio Conte would continue as Chelsea’s manager following his apparent fall-out with Chelsea’s hierarchy. The absence of Diego Costa was a big drawback for the Blues, who weren’t able to get the best out of Alvaro Morata, following his blistering start to the season.
After a slew of disappointing results, Conte’s sacking looked inevitable. Winning the FA Cup has lightened the mood a little but the Italian’s future at Chelsea is still uncertain. And it looks like Slavisa Jokanovic could be a potential replacement.
If that’s the case, here are three players Jokanovic should sign to help Chelsea break into the top-four again.
As the man who has been responsible for overseeing one of England’s brightest prospects, Jokanovic could be instrumental in bringing Sessegnon from Fulham to Chelsea. The youngster took the Championship by storm as he enjoyed a blistering season with the Cottagers. The 18-year-old scored 16 goals and contributed 8 assists to help Fulham gain promotion back to the Premier League.
While Sessegnon may not be the immediate answer to Chelsea’s defensive woes, he will certainly bolster their squad. At such a young age, his development at a top club like Chelsea will be immense, and Jokanovic could be the perfect person to help him.
If Chelsea want to mount a serious title charge next season, they must get rid of Morata. The Spaniard looked out of sorts at Stamford Bridge with opposition defenders leaving no stone unturned in making his life miserable. Morata often fails to adapt his game as per the situation and that helps opponents figure out his moves.
Icardi is a player Jokanovic must consider as the Argentine offers more dynamism compared to Morata. He can make the intelligent runs required to find spaces behind the defenders, while his pace offers the extra threat needed to unlock the most stubborn defences.
The Roma man is one of the most wanted goalkeepers in world football right now and if Chelsea can bring the Brazilian to Stamford Bridge, it will be nothing short of a coup. Jokanovic could utilize him as Thibaut Courtois’ replacement, should the Belgian seek a move away from the club.
Needless to say, these proposed transfers are highly speculative in nature and are dependant on Jokanovic’s potential move to Chelsea. The Blues have a lot of issues that need to be sorted out and Roman Abrahamovic has quite a few important decisions to make.
