Three Liverpool Players Who Could Be Offloaded In The Summer
Jurgen Klopp has been a massive influence for Liverpool since his arrival back in 2015 and the Reds have improved immensely under him compared to their barren run during Brendan Rodgers’ final days of a comprehensive managerial tenure at Merseyside.
They, however, could not keep hold of Philippe Coutinho for the remainder of the campaign as he forced a move away from the club in order to join Barcelona. Klopp’s decision to not splash the cash on the Brazilian’s replacement received stern criticism from the supporters.
Although the English heavyweights concluded the long-pending deal of Dutchman Virgil Van Dijk as soon as the transfer window reopened in the winter, a few high-profile exits, however, are likely to happen in the summer. It is to be seen whether Klopp makes reinforcements in the summer or it turns out to be another window of balancing the books and negative net transfer spending.
These are three such high-profile exits that are expected to occur in the summer.
Emre Can
The German panzer will be out of contract this summer and despite repeated negotiations with his entourage, the club did not accept the terms of inserting a release clause in Can’s new contract. The young Germany international is in advanced talks with Juventus to complete his Bosman switch.
It is indeed a big disappointment for Liverpool to lose someone of his caliber for free. But accepting Can’s demands, on the other hand, would have exposed the Reds’ transfer resilience as it might damage contract talks with the other stars in the longer run. It now needs to be figured out whether Klopp decides to bring in a like-for-like replacement or promote someone within the squad.
Simon Mignolet
The Belgian international is likely to draw an end to his 5-year association with the club and move elsewhere in search of assured game time after losing his place to Loris Karius. Klopp has promoted the German as the club’s No. 1 and will only dip into the market if the ex-Mainz custodian fails to impress in the remainder of the campaign.
Mignolet’s place could further be jeopardised in the summer and at the age of 30, it is unlikely for the Belgian to continue as second-fiddle and wait for opportunities to come.
Daniel Sturridge
There was never any doubt regarding his goal-scoring ability and impact in the opponent’s box but the Englishman has struggled to remain fit since the scintillating 2013-14 campaign. His injury disappointment seems to be never-ending.
He was loaned to West Bromwich Albion last month to gain some regular minutes but was forced to leave the pitch on his Baggies debut within three minutes into the game against his former employers Chelsea. Sturridge enters the final year of his Liverpool contract this summer and might not be handed a new one to extend his stay.
Liverpool may be happy to listen to offers for the prolific Englishman who is long past his prime and is now down the pecking order behind Roberto Firmino, Danny Ings and even the young Dominic Solanke in Liverpool colours.
A few other names, however, are likely to be trimmed off prior to the next campaign. Divock Origi, currently on loan with Wolfsburg, has not managed to make much impact. He is likely to be offloaded alongside Lazar Markovic, whose miserable Liverpool tenure could come to an end on a permanent basis in the upcoming summer transfer window.
