Two Players Who Could Leave Bristol City This Summer

Bristol City, despite one win in 13 games in all competitions, are still in with a great chance of reaching the playoffs and potentially being a Premier League side next season.

In the likes of Joe Bryan, Frank Fielding, Aden Flint and arguably Bobby Reid and Nathan Baker, they have a small core of players who look as though they’d cope in the top league too so they wouldn’t automatically be also-rans. Whatever league they play in next season, they have now set up a foundation to make themselves the best Bristol City they can possibly be, something this club has not done for as long as I can remember.

They are the big club in what is a large, football supporting city and so it’s all set up for them one day to reach their true potential. Now could be that time. With all that in mind, any player not capable of top-2 Championship football should be moved on and replaced with people more capable and so the following two may be shown the door:

Matty Taylor

Having pinched him from local rivals Bristol Rovers last January, Taylor hasn’t really reached the sort of heights the club may have expected and while his rise from lower league football is admirable, there will be no room for passengers on City’s journey next season.

Taylor is 27 now, not going to get much better, and has commanded 15 league games this season with 11 of them being substitute appearances. So I don’t think Lee Johnson will be begging the board to give him a bumper contract extension.

Jens Hegeler

The 30-year-old German is another who only came in last January but he’s not going to improve now and City have better players in his position, most notably Aden Flint and Nathan Baker.

A knee injury has kept him out for most of this season and the club have been happy utilising their other centre-back options, so Hegeler being under contract until 2019 means they will likely attempt to offload him and receive some sort of a transfer fee.

Any money they can get into Ashton Gate for players like Hegeler and Taylor could come in really useful but, as written above, the main point is to shift on any players who are simply not good enough either for the Premier League or for a sustained Championship promotion challenge.
