Young Boys v Rangers Report – Rangers Match Report
Rangers suffered a late 2-1 defeat at the hands of Young Boys away in Switzerland to lose their top spot in their Europa League group.
Roger Assale and Christian Fassnacht were the scorers for the home side, who were initially behind via Alfredo Morelos’ well-taken goal just before half-time.
The Rangers striker had a chance early on in the game to put his side ahead, however, he scuffed his effort straight at the keeper following a good ball from Borna Barisic.
But in the 44th minute, he made no mistake with an identical opportunity. This time, the Colombian bounced off one defender before firing a shot into the back of the net.
Steven Gerrard’s men, who had a fantastic first half, could have gone two up before interval, but Sheyi Ojo flashed his effort across the face of the goal.
Young Boys came hard at the Gers after the breakthough. They got themselves level in the 50th minute after James Tavernier was caught dwelling in possession near the corner flag of his half.
Ulisses Garcia then had the time to produce a good cross for Assale, who ran past Filip Helander and tucked his effort in.
From then on, it was Rangers who created the better chances to put themselves back ahead. However, Morelos had his efforts saved by the Young Boys keeper.
In the 93rd minute, when things looked good for the away side, a Helander clearance fell into the path of Tavernier, who lost his footing and allowed Fassnacht to fire his effort into the back of the net.
It was a crushing blow for Gerrard’s men who were very good away from home but had nothing to show for it.
