Tottenham opinion: Who should Spurs sign – Ndombele or Gomes?
After failing to sign a single player in the last two transfer windows, Tottenham Hotspur are in dire need of reinforcements this summer. Spurs’ decision to not bolster their squad cost them the opportunity of challenging for the title as well as winning the Champions League.
Mauricio Pochettino’s brilliance played a big part in Spurs reaching the final of Europe’s elite competition but their lack of top quality midfielders, barring Christian Eriksen saw them succumb to a 2-0 loss against Liverpool.
Spurs desperately need to strengthen their midfield and if reports are to be believed, they are doing just that. Spurs have been linked with Barcelona’s Andre Gomes and Olympique Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele over moves in the summer.
Gomes has had a spectacular campaign in the Premier League in his loan spell with Everton, which makes him a very good shout for Spurs to pick him up. Ndombele, on the other hand, has been quite a revelation this season and his performances have left a ton of people in awe.
Spurs will massively improve with either of the midfielders in their ranks but how do they compare to each other statistically? Let’s find out.
Defensively
Gomes has averaged 1.4 tackles and 0.7 interceptions this season while being dribbled past 1.7 times and conceded 1.8 fouls per game in the Premier League. The Portuguese international won 1.4 aerial duels per game but was booked 7 times in his 27 appearances. (WhoScored)
Ndombele’s defensive numbers blow Gomes out of the water. The £65m-rated Frenchman averaged 1.9 tackles and 0.9 interceptions while being dribbled past just 0.9 times and conceding 1.2 fouls. His aerial duels rate is just 0.6 per game but he picked up just 3 yellow cards despite playing 7 games more. (WhoScored)
Verdict: Tanguy Ndombele
Offensively
The Portuguese international scored once and assisted just another all season which has been a worrying issue for the Toffees. Gomes averaged 0.8 shots per game, 0.2 key passes per game while being dispossessed 1.9 times.
His pass completion rate was an impressive 84%, as he averaged 44 passes per game of which 3.5 were long balls. (WhoScored)
The 22-year-old Frenchman was once again a lot more impressive thanks to his brilliant tally of 7 assists in the Ligue 1. Ndombele averaged better shots at goal, much better key passes and was dispossessed a lot lesser than Gomes.
The Lyon powerhouse boasted of almost 90% passing accuracy despite averaging a lot more passes but his average long balls per game were considerably lesser to Gomes’. (WhoScored)
Verdict: Tanguy Ndombele

Conclusion
Statistically, Tanguy Ndombele’s numbers have been far superior to Andre Gomes’ last season. The Frenchman beats the Barcelona midfielder in almost every category and considering that he is a lot younger than Gomes, Spurs should snap him up as quickly as possible.
