Barcelona 3-0 Chelsea: Leo Messi Kicks Conte’s Blues Out Of Champions League

Barcelona dashed Chelsea’s hopes of qualifying further in the Champions League as they beat them 3-0 (aggregate 4-1) on Wednesday at the Camp Nou. It was a spectacular attacking display from the home side, led by the legendary Lionel Messi as the prolific Argentine scored twice to solidify the Catalans’ stronghold on the driver’s seat.

Although Chelsea worked hard in the second half, they simply could not match Barcelona’s power and with the full backing of the crowd, Ernesto Valverde’s men put in a fine performance to outplay the Premier League side.

Ousmane Dembele also stepped up and scored the second goal for the club, meaning they have safely progressed to the next stage of the elite European tournament. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how each player fared against the Blues.

Barcelona Player Ratings

Marc-Andre Ter Stegen – 7/10

Ter Stegen was not tested much but on very few occasions that Chelsea got close to the goal, he made some routine saves.

Sergi Roberto – 4/10

It was an unusually shaky display from Roberto. He failed to contain the likes of Marcos Alonso and Willian and looked exposed on several occasions.

Gerard Pique – 9/10

Kept Olivier Giroud at bay and put in a solid display at the back.

Samuel Umtiti

Samuel Umtiti – 9.5/10

Umtiti was arguably Barcelona’s most influential player. He made important crosses and crucial interceptions throughout the game and Chelsea looked visibly frustrated.

Jordi Alba – 8/10

Alba put in an impressive all-around performance and was responsible for making some much-needed blocks as well.

Sergio Busquets – 7/10

Busquets put in a tough fight against N’Golo Kante and was an influential presence in the midfield area as well. However, the player did pick up an injury.

Ivan Rakitic – 7/10

Rakitic put in a promising display and was important at maintaining the fluidity in possession.

Andres Iniesta – 7.5/10

Iniesta put in yet another solid display in the centre of the park but his exhaustion was quite visible as minutes ticked by.

Lionel Messi

Ousmane Dembele – 8.5/10

Scored the second goal for the club and it must be said that the youngster is back, to make up for lost time. His finishing was top-notch and his presence sharpened the Barcelona attack.

Lionel Messi – 9.5/10

Messi once again made all the difference for Barcelona. He was actually involved in Dembele’s goal as well and besides that, his overall performance was fantastic.

Luis Suarez – 7/10

Suarez once again worked hard and put in a solid shift but he could not find the back of the net.

Subs:

Paulinho – 7/10

Added some solidity to the midfield in Iniesta’s absence.

Andre Gomes – 7.5/10

It was a confident and assured display from Gomes.

Aleix Vidal – 6/10

Vidal made his presence felt and was decent enough to keep things ticking.
