Why Wolves should go all out to sign Ben Davies in January

According to a report from Express, Wolves are planning a £10m January swoop for Preston defender Ben Davies.

Ben Davies, 24, has been a pivotal figure in helping Preston maintain their challenge for a high finish in the Championship table. Wolves have watched the left-footed defender in action a couple of times in recent weeks and are planning to make a move for him but will face competition from Brighton, the report adds.

Wolves are starting to recover from a slow start to the season. The 2-1 victory over Midlands rivals Aston Villa before the international break would have given them a lot of confidence ahead of the busy schedule that also involves Europa League games.

Nuno Espirito Santo has been hit by several injury problems including one to defender Willy Boly, who has had an operation to repair a broken leg and is set to be sidelined for a couple of months. Boly is a really tough defender, integral to how Wolves build up from the back, and his injury has definitely hit Nuno.

Meanwhile, Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett haven’t looked as imperious as they were last season, while on-loan Real Madrid defender Jesus Vallejo hasn’t convinced.

Injury to Boly and a lack of faith in Vallejo have seen Nuno use Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss as the two centre-backs but they are both better in the midfield. That’s why a new central defender is exactly what the Wanderers need in January and Ben Davies would fit the billing perfectly.

Predominantly a centre-back, Davies can also operate at left-back and his form for Preston this season has been excellent. The defender has enjoyed a fine campaign so far for the Lilywhites, managing 15 appearances so far.

The 24-year-old is a proven player in the Championship and looks ready to make the step up. Davies has been playing well for a number of seasons now. It would be fair to say that he has now established himself in England’s second-tier. Truly, the 6ft 1in stopper deserves a chance to show his worth in the top-flight.

Verdict

The English defender fits the bill perfectly for Nuno’s system. Being a left-footed player, Davies would bring a much-needed balance to Wolves back-three, whilst improving the quality of the squad. With games set to come thick and fast, signing the Preston defender is an absolute must for the Wanderers.
