Back in May 2018, Daily Mail had reported that Wolves were one the clubs interested in signing then Krasnodar striker Fyodor Smolov. However, a deal didn’t materialize and he joined Lokomotiv Moscow post the World Cup last year.
Fyodor Smolov, 29, enjoyed a prolific three-year spell with Krasnador, scoring 53 goals in 75 appearances. However, his debut season at Lokomotiv Moscow was underwhelming as he managed just six goals and two assists in 22 league games.
The Russian international has hit the ground running in the new season, bagging three goals and as many assists in 11 appearances so far. With Smolov doing well in the Russian Premier League, Wolves must not hesitate to reignite their interest in the striker during the winter transfer window.
Wolves have lacked goals this season despite bolstering the striking department with Patrick Cutrone. The Wanderers have Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota as options upfront but things haven’t been great for them.
With 14 goals in 11 games, Wolves need a proven goalscorer to share Jimenez’s burden as well as compete with Jota and Cutrone. Smolov has been a prolific goalscorer in his career, both for club and country.
The Russian might not be a long-term investment but for a reasonable price, he would be worth every single penny. Thus, the Wanderers must sign Smolov at the earliest.
