Wolves signing this 29-year-old World Cup runner-up would help them achieve better things in the PL next season

Wolves opinion: Should Nuno Santo consider a move for Domagoj Vida?

ESPN (h/t Sporx) has reported that Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in making a move for Croatian star Domagoj Vida. The Molineux Stadium has an impressive team at their disposal and believe that adding someone like Vida would help take them to the next level.

Currently, at Besiktas, the Croatian center-back has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League. Both Arsenal and Tottenham (ESPN) are interested, with Liverpool (Express) said to have had a bid rejected earlier in the season.

It’s no surprise, however, that Wolves have now entered the race, especially with manager Nuno Espirito Santo looking to solidify his back-line. At the moment, the former FC Porto player has just three centre-backs at his disposal.

This includes captain Connor Coady, who has been linked with a move away, Ryan Bennett and former Porto star Willy Boly. All three men have impressed this season, playing regularly in Santo’s preferred back-three formation.

However, barring the three men mentioned, Wolves have no other regular centre-backs and that may cause a few problems. The club is on course to finish with a Europa League spot and that comes with the added pressure of extra games in a season.

On average, any club that goes past the group stage will play around 50 games in a season. That means that rotation is a key tool in any manager’s arsenal and that is not a luxury that Nuno Espirito Santo has.

Bringing someone like Domagoj Vida into the fold will help Wolves with that and the 29-year-old has plenty of experience. So far, over the course of his career, Vida has amassed just under 80 appearances in European competitions and already has 71 caps for Croatia at a senior-level.

This includes the 2018 World Cup and the qualifiers before that, where the 29-year-old centre-back was an absolute monster in defense. Not the tallest defender in the world, Vida still manages to consistently win aerial battles.

However, Vida’s versatility is his best attribute, with the 29-year-old capable of playing across the back-line. That’s the kind of ability that would make him a perfect player for Nuno Espirito Santo’s system and he could make them a force to be reckoned with.

Conclusion

Wolves need another center-back at their disposal, one who can help lead them to even brighter things next season.

They have been downright incredible in their first season back and will have to maintain that going forward. Adding someone as solid and reliable as Domagoj Vida will certainly help them with that.
